The Lisos runs along the western edge of Saint-Sauveur-de-Meilhan and also marks the boundary between Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde. The commune is also home to a Natura 2000 site, a circular trail, the parish church of Saint-Sauveur and horse-riding activities. For your getaway, you can focus on nature, village history or activities in the saddle. You can first decide whether you would prefer to spend the day on foot, exploring the heritage or taking part in an arranged riding activity.
The Lisos, protected site and circular trail
The Lisos runs along the western edge of the commune and also forms the boundary between the departments of Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde. It is therefore both a landscape feature and a geographical landmark between two departments. Saint-Sauveur-de-Meilhan is part of the “Réseau hydrographique du Lisos” Natura 2000 site. Protected species found there include the European mink, the otter, several species of lamprey and eels. The mink and otter are mammals, alongside lampreys and eels; the wildlife therefore includes several different groups rather than just one species. The protected site offers a nature-focused perspective on your stay that goes beyond the geographical boundary.
The circular trail is marked with yellow blazes. You can plan your pace and breaks as you wish. This gives you a practical guide for planning your route and lets you tailor your walk to your own preferences.
The church and traces of the former village
The parish church of Saint-Sauveur was built between 1880 and 1882 in the Neo-Gothic style. In late spring 1940, it was completely covered in trompe-l’œil paintings by Masutti in just under two months. Trompe-l’œil refers to illusionistic painting that creates a sense of depth on a flat surface. The church therefore reflects two distinct periods: its construction in the late 19th century and its painted decoration in 1940.
The cemetery near the hamlet of Saint-Sauveur is a surviving remnant of the former village and lies close to the walking trail. It offers a tangible connection to the former settlement, as well as to architectural and artistic history. The parish church is not open to the public; to visit, you must contact the town hall on 05 53 94 31 70 on a Tuesday or Thursday between 2 and 6 pm.
Horse rides and riding treks
Claverie riding farm offers horse rides and riding treks in Saint-Sauveur-de-Meilhan. It welcomes everyone from children aged three and up to experienced riders throughout the year, by appointment. So arranging a time is the first step in planning your visit. This differs from the circular trail, where the 6.3-kilometre distance provides a clear starting point for planning how long your walk will take. The two options give you a choice between a horse ride and a riding trek; discuss your preferred experience with the farm in advance.
