Clay, woodland, rural heritage and trails give Moirax a range of things to explore. When choosing accommodation, consider what you want to shape your stay: walks in natural surroundings, a glimpse of rural architectural history, or cultural activities centred on clay and local history. This lets you plan your trip around the themes that interest you most.
Trotte-Lapin nature area
The Trotte-Lapin nature area covers 7 hectares. It includes woodland typical of the area, meadows, a former limestone quarry, a pond and the Jorle stream. A walk here takes in a variety of landscape features, not just woodland.
Individuals can go for a walk there with their families; information panels share insights about the surrounding natural environment. The immediate surroundings of the old farm are not accessible. Bear this restriction in mind when planning your visit.
Coming from Agen, you can reach Trotte-Lapin via a car park just beyond the bridge over the Jorle; access then continues along a 1 km forest path. Allow for this walk when planning your visit, and check local access information beforehand.
Grand Contras dovecote
The Grand Contras dovecote is a square, standalone extension of the roadside farm, dating back to the 18th century. You can appreciate both its architectural form and its relationship to the farm and the roadside.
The restoration used a timber frame made from local oak; old roof tiles and bricks were reused. These materials make the restoration a tangible part of the building’s history. Those interested in rural craftsmanship can therefore discover specific restoration details as well as the historic building itself.
Visits are possible by appointment made by phone; admission costs 4 euros per person. As a visit must be arranged by phone, check the current contact details beforehand.
Clay, local history and the pilgrimage routes to Santiago
Moirax Céramique organises workshops as well as artistic and cultural events centred on working with clay. This is a different focus from the dovecote: here, the subject is clay and how it is shaped. If you would like to plan for a particular workshop or event, check the dates beforehand.
With PatrimoineTour, you can discover the history of places in Moirax using QR codes. Edetours offers a playful, immersive visit centred on the Priory of Moirax. The two offerings use different approaches: PatrimoineTour focuses on the history of places, while Edetours centres on a visit around the priory.
The GR 652 offers another point of interest: as a variant of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago from Figeac via Rocamadour to La Romieu, it passes through the entire commune of Moirax. This is different in scale from individual sites and activities, such as the nature area or the dovecote. If you are interested in pilgrimage routes, you can take this route through the commune into account when choosing what to focus on in Moirax.
The ways to visit also differ: Trotte-Lapin offers walks for individuals and their families; visiting the dovecote requires an appointment by phone. The cultural activities range in focus from working with clay to the history of places and the priory. This lets you choose how much to focus on nature, architectural history and interpretation, according to your interests.
