Château history and routes through the countryside give Lauzun two distinct sides: Renaissance buildings and church art take centre stage in the village, while signposted circular walks and mountain bike trails lead to different heritage and landscape highlights. There is also a digital museum, a weekly market and visits that sometimes need to be arranged in advance.

Château History and Architecture

The donjon of the Château de Lauzun was already standing in the 13th century. The Renaissance château was built alongside it around 1539. It was the residence of the first Duke of Lauzun, Antonin Nompar de Caumont (1632–1723). Notable architectural features include two monumental marble fireplaces in the Italian Renaissance style.

The château can be viewed from the outside all year round; the interior is not open to visitors. If you plan to see the exterior, check the latest access information before you travel. Another protected building is the Maison aux Cariatides: its street-facing façade and roof were listed as historic monuments by decree on 10 March 1971.

Church Art at the Église Saint-Etienne

The Gothic Église Saint-Etienne is a protected historic monument. It was remodelled in the 16th century and again during the Second Empire, from 1866 to 1871. Two columns with capitals beneath the bell tower, along with a portal featuring seven pointed-arch archivolts, remain from the earlier Romanesque church. These architectural elements offer a glimpse into the church’s earlier history.

The furnishings also reward a closer look: the altarpiece and pulpit date from the 17th century. The central painting on the altarpiece depicts Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata. The church is open daily from 10 am to 7 pm all year round; visits are available by appointment. As opening information can change, check the times in advance if a visit is a firm part of your plans.

Digital Culture and Practical Visit Planning

The Micro-Folie Lauzun combines an interactive digital museum with a collection of works from major museums. It offers virtual exhibitions, concerts, videos and educational content. Virtual reality experiences include the chance to explore Pompeii and Mont Blanc. As programme details can change, check the latest events and sessions before you travel.

The Micro-Folie also includes a FabLab, equipped with 3D printers, a laser cutter and engraver, and digital embroidery technology. A free on-site training session is required before using the machines. Check the latest equipment and access requirements in advance if you plan to visit the FabLab specifically.

Walks, Puzzles and Mountain Bike Routes

For a manageable circular walk through the village, try the signposted Balade découverte à Lauzun: it is 1.4 kilometres long and takes an average of 45 minutes. Another way to discover Lauzun’s heritage is the Tèrra Aventura treasure hunt, “La tournée des grands ducs”. Five puzzles lead to local monuments and heritage sites.

Both mountain bike loops start at the car park by Lac de Lauzun; Route 2 starts there, below the château. Route 2, “La Vallée du Dropt”, focuses on architectural and natural heritage. Route 3, “Le Tour des églises”, takes in four churches in the commune. Their different focuses make it easy to choose between a tour with a broad heritage theme and a route specifically linking churches.

The Circuit des Ducs de Lauzun offers another perspective on the landscape: the route passes through gently rolling countryside around the Château des Ducs de Lauzun. Plum orchards used for Ente plums alternate with land for livestock and cereal farming. Check route details before setting out to ensure the information suits your planned trip.

Market and Visits by Appointment

A weekly market selling local produce is held in Lauzun every Saturday. Guided visits with the Raconteurs de Pays are available all year round by appointment. Cirerie Terre Acacia also offers guided visits to its shop by reservation. If these visits are important to your trip, arrange them in advance and confirm the latest conditions.
