Escassefort lies on a hill northeast of Marmande. There are two different ways to explore the village: the “Fil vert escargot d'Escassefort” leads to notable places in the village; the “Saint-Avit, la balade de la Fon du Roc” route runs from Saint-Avit through Escassefort and along the Magdeleine hillside to Beaupuy. There are also visible remains of fortifications, the Sainte-Marcianne church and a wine producer in Mansac, Escassefort.

A village route created by the community

The “Fil vert escargot d'Escassefort” was created by residents on 16 June 2023 as part of a participatory workshop. It leads to notable places in the village; information boards created by residents and voluntary associations complement the route. The Fil vert also features footprints that you can stand on to raise your gaze and discover a viewpoint. In this way, the route combines local discoveries with explanations from the community and a deliberate change of perspective. The availability of the boards and the condition of the ground markings may change. If you would like to factor these features into your plans, check their availability or condition before your visit.

Church and remains of fortifications

Around the village centre and the church, substantial substructures of a fortification are still clearly visible at the Remparts d'Escassefort. The massive rectangular buttresses give the visible remains their distinctive architectural form. The Sainte-Marcianne church offers a different type of architecture: the current neo-Gothic bell tower dates from 1880 and is topped by a spire. The visible foundations of the fortifications and the clearly dated neo-Gothic tower thus offer contrasting architectural impressions in the village. Sainte-Marcianne is also listed as a stop in a diocesan pastoral programme dated 20 March 2025.

A route with clear details

The “Saint-Avit, la balade de la Fon du Roc” route runs from Saint-Avit through Escassefort and along the Magdeleine hillside to Beaupuy. It is 5.8 kilometres long and rated easy. Compared with the Fil vert, it focuses more on a defined route; its length and rating provide practical guidance when choosing. The village route, in turn, leads to notable places in Escassefort and includes information boards and the footprints described above. Route conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Plan your wine visit by appointment

Château Côte de France in Mansac, Escassefort, welcomes visitors by appointment. Arrange your visit before travelling. AOC Côtes du Marmandais wines are available there in red, white and rosé. The three varieties give a clear overview of the wine selection, but do not imply any particular tasting offer. The château is accessible to people with reduced mobility; check current accessibility before your visit, as it may change. The pre-arranged visit and clear choice of wines make the château a separate point to plan during your stay.
