A 12th-century Benedictine abbey church, a historic fountain with a washhouse and a loop trail along the banks of the Lot give Clairac a varied cultural and outdoor profile. When planning your trip, you can prioritise buildings and activities according to your interests. Travel dates also matter: swimming is available for a limited period in summer, and tours take place on specific days and at specific times.
Church, monastery and historic houses
The Église Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens was a 12th-century Benedictine abbey church and became a parish church in the 17th century. It was listed as a Monument historique in 1996. Together with Clairac Abbey and the adjoining church, the Maison des Dames de la Foy forms a religious ensemble. The Ancien couvent dit Maison des Dames de la Foy was established through a royal endowment when the Edict of Nantes was revoked, in a predominantly Protestant setting. Until the French Revolution, the Maison taught girls to read and write and instructed them in religious duties.
Another perspective on the town’s history can be found at the Font'Grand on rue Gambetta. The historic fountain includes a washhouse; its 16th-century reservoir is topped by a rib-vaulted ceiling. The washhouse was renovated in the 1990s. A plaque commemorating tolerance stands on Place Viçoze.
The Maison à pans de bois at 2 rue Broustet is currently used as a museum; you should check visitor access separately. Its architecture features a brick base and two storeys of brick and timber in a chevron pattern. Other features include wooden mullioned windows and a projecting timber gallery. These elements give the house a different architectural character from the town’s religious buildings.
Routes and activities along the Lot
Loop trail No. 121 links the banks of the Lot with some of Clairac’s historic streets. The walking route, which partly passes through the town, is 5 kilometres long; it takes about 1 hour 40 minutes to walk, with a total elevation gain of 60 metres. Check local conditions before setting off. As another point of reference, Clairac lies on a variant of the GR®654-Est Way of St James, which connects Bergerac with Montréal-du-Gers. You should also check the trail markings before setting out.
The Circuit Pont de Roussanes–Clairac also offers an easy 12.5-kilometre road cycling route with 55 metres of ascent. At 5 kilometres, walking route No. 121 is considerably shorter; its stated elevation gain of 60 metres is close to that of the cycling route. This lets you compare the two routes by mode of travel and length without treating them as the same route. VTCs and e-bikes are available to rent at the Point Information Touristique de la Halle; cycling routes are also available. Check the current rental terms and reservation requirements in advance.
There is a beach on the banks of the Lot where seasonal swimming is available from 1 July to 31 August. Check swimming conditions before your trip. KAYAKOMAT offers self-service kayak rental on the Lot in Clairac; you should also check current availability in advance.
Guided tours and when to visit
The guided tour “Visite de Clairac entre Guyenne et Gascogne” is scheduled to start at the Halle de Clairac at 10 a.m. on Thursdays and lasts 1 hour 15 minutes. “Clairac et les bords du Lot” is scheduled for Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. and also lasts 1 hour 15 minutes. As schedules and availability may change, check the date in advance if a guided tour is central to your stay.
Local food history also offers a historical connection: the origins of Pruneau d’Agen are associated with monks at Clairac Abbey in the 13th century. According to tradition, they improved local plums with damson plums brought from Syria. This is a historical association, not a claim that the abbey produces them today.
Plan a stay that suits you
If you plan to swim, bear in mind that the season runs from 1 July to 31 August; if you want to take a guided tour, you can plan around the stated days and confirm the date. You can then decide whether to focus your stay on historic buildings, a walk or bike ride, or activities on the water.
