Cancon can be discovered from different perspectives: a panoramic viewpoint offers a view over the town, while the lake and plantations provide paths into the surrounding landscape. There are also historic buildings and a tour that connects hazelnut growing with an industrial production site. This gives you a choice of culture, walks and agriculture for your trip, without reducing all the impressions to a single theme.

Panoramic views and a walk by the lake

The Panorama 360° de Cancon viewpoint is at the highest point of the medieval quarter in the old village. An orientation table there provides a complete panoramic view. The site is open year-round, but access is steep; hiking shoes are recommended. Check access before your visit, as conditions may change seasonally or as a result of maintenance.

The Lac de Cancon offers a different perspective: the 2.4-hectare fishing lake lies in a hollow in the Centre touristique du Lac de Cancon. It is open year-round for walks; visitors can also picnic and play minigolf there. Together, the viewpoint at the highest point of the old village and the walk by the lake in the hollow offer different ways to spend time in Cancon.

Historic traces in Cancon

The Église Notre-Dame de Milhac is located in Cancon and is listed as a protected historic monument. It was renovated in the late 15th or early 16th century. The fortified town centre also features a Baltard-style market hall as part of its architectural heritage. The church and market hall offer distinct points of interest: the history of a church building’s renovation and the distinctive design of a market hall.

You can explore the fortified town centre with Marie Claude Eguimendia, a «Raconteuse de Pays». If you plan to join this guided discovery, check before your trip whether it is available on your dates. This lets you experience the historic perspective not only through the buildings, but also on a guided discovery of the town centre.

Hazelnut plantations, routes and production

Hazelnuts shape both the landscape and one of the tours in Cancon. The tour of the Unicoque cooperative and hazelnut plantations visits the orchard and the industrial production site. Online booking is mandatory for this tour, and places are limited. As booking requirements may change and seasonal dates may vary, check availability in advance.

The routes also differ in their landscapes and destinations. The route from Cancon to Église de Millac passes through hazelnut plantations and ends at a viewpoint on the castle hill of the former castle. The route from Cancon to Moulinet runs through plum and hazelnut plantations. Both routes therefore pass through hazelnut plantations; the Moulinet route also includes plum plantations, while the route to Millac ends at a viewpoint.

Regional specialities along the route to Moulinet include Prunes d’Entes, processed at the Lamouthe drying cooperative, as well as Kokine hazelnut-based confectionery, which is marketed there. Together with the orchard and production site tour, these products add another dimension to the hazelnut theme: it is not only about plantations in the landscape, but also the processing and marketing of regional produce.
