Montrem can be explored in different ways: a gentle hiking route with a clearly stated duration contrasts with a cycle route of more than 100 kilometres. There is also Romanesque architecture, local history, tastings and concerts, mostly in summer. You can plan your trip around whether you have in mind a manageable hike, longer routes or cultural and culinary events.

Hiking and cycling on different scales

The Boucle des truffières runs for 7.5 kilometres through Montrem and is classified as an easy hiking route. It is listed as taking 2 hours 30 minutes. This gives you a clearly defined hike, with a distance and duration that are easy to fit into your day’s plans.

The Voie Verte cycle route offers a different scale: it runs for more than 100 kilometres from Périgueux (Trélissac) to the Gironde border near Le Pizou. It can be used on foot, by bicycle or on roller skates, alone or with family. In Montrem, the cycle route crosses the Isle via a pedestrian bridge. Motor vehicles are generally prohibited on sections designated as a voie verte; exceptions are service vehicles and vehicles belonging to adjacent farmers.

The options differ in both route length and how you can get around: the Boucle is an easy hike with a stated duration, while the cycle route offers several ways to travel and covers more than 100 kilometres in total. Consider whether you would like to include a clearly defined hike or the longer route in your stay.

Churches and local history

The sanctuary with its semicircular apse and the square bay beneath a dome survive from the Romanesque Église Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens. The church is still used for some ceremonies. In Montanceix, the church was built by the Bousquet family in 1878 and is used for regular services. The Château de Montanceix was once the seat of the seigneurial estate for the parish of Montrem.

These places offer different historical perspectives: surviving Romanesque features, a church with a specific date and the château’s former role as a seat of seigneurial power. Visitors interested in architecture and local history can explore several aspects of Montrem’s past.

Visits and summer concerts

The Ferme Payenchet offers guided visits by prior arrangement. Individual and group visits with a tasting are free of charge. You can plan a visit to the farm as an individual activity or a group outing; in either case, a tasting is included.

La Petite Écluse hosts various concerts, mainly in summer, as part of the Estivales de Montrem. If you would like to include a concert in your plans, check the dates against your travel period. This also lets you consider combining a farm visit arranged in advance with the seasonal music programme during your stay.

Planning a suitable stay

For a farm visit, allow for the need to arrange it in advance; for concerts, bear in mind that they take place mainly in summer. This lets you choose your travel dates based on the activities that matter most to you.
