A château with a history, a puzzle-based treasure hunt and a walking trail in the Périgord Vert give Mareuil different ways to shape a trip. There is also an annual event in September. You can choose between a historical focus, a puzzle-based activity and a walk. Each calls for different planning: for the château, you need to arrange a guided tour in advance; for the Boucle, check the starting point; and for Terra Aventura, check the current app content.

Château and museum

The Château de Mareuil was rebuilt in the 15th century as a lowland château on the site of a medieval fortress. The fortress had been destroyed during the Hundred Years’ War. The sequence thus runs from the fortress’s destruction to the château’s later reconstruction. The château also houses a museum dedicated to Marshal Lannes. The building’s history and the museum’s dedication give the place two distinct historical associations: the development of the building and its dedication to Marshal Lannes. The term “lowland château” refers to its location in the lowlands; the medieval fortress and the château rebuilt in the 15th century represent two different periods of construction.

The château can be visited only by prior arrangement and exclusively as part of a guided tour. Arrange your visit in advance and check the visiting conditions before your trip.

Puzzles and a walk

Terra Aventura in Mareuil is a treasure hunt in which you solve clues and puzzles and search for a treasure. Compared with a visit to the château, the focus shifts from history and the museum to an active puzzle-solving challenge. If you prefer a more playful approach, the treasure hunt offers a different way to discover Mareuil. As app content may be updated, check the latest clues before you set off.

The Boucle du Château is a walking trail in the Périgord Vert. It starts at the signpost on Place de la Victoire. The published starting point may change if the trail signage is updated, so check the signs before setting out. Unlike Terra Aventura, which centres on puzzles and a treasure hunt, this route is primarily a walk.

An annual event and finding accommodation

Mareuil residents’ annual celebration on 8 September is dedicated to the sculpture of the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Bon Secours. If this date matters to your plans, check the event dates in advance.

A stay around 8 September has a different timing consideration from a trip that includes a visit to the château: this is possible only by prior arrangement and as part of a guided tour.
