Alaminos combines the history of its churches and village with two named mountain biking routes. Its historical trail leads from the stone Koulas fortress, built around the 15th century, to the main church, completed in 1992. At the same time, both routes share a starting point at Alaminos Beach. This brings tangible cultural heritage and a distinct cycling option together.
Churches and Icons
The main church in Alaminos is dedicated to Saint Mamas and was completed in 1992. A mosaic depicting the saint is located on its western exterior wall. The dedication and mosaic therefore refer to the same figure, but connect him to the church in different ways: one as its dedicatee, the other as an image on the exterior wall.
The main church also houses a 19th-century icon. It depicts the saint seated on a lion and holding a lamb. The icon was transferred to the main church from the old church in Alaminos. Its depiction and provenance give the artwork two historical points of reference: the image of the saint and the icon’s transfer between the churches.
The old church of Agios Mamas stands in the higher part of the village and was built around 1600. Inside are wall paintings and a wooden iconostasis. Their construction dates differ considerably: around 1600 for the old church and 1992 for the main church. The two churches can thus be distinguished by their names, construction dates and the features mentioned for each.
Fortress and Memorial Sites
The stone Koulas fortress is about eight metres high and was built around the 15th century. Its approximate construction date places it in historical context, while its height gives an idea of the structure’s size. Together with the old church, dating to around 1600, and the main church from 1992, it forms a timeline of different buildings in Alaminos. These three dates range from the approximate period of the fortress, through the old church, to the completion of the main church.
The traditional village fountains also tell the story of the area. Built in 1954, they recall how women once filled their water jars there. The Monument to the Five Heroes commemorates five men who died on 20 July 1974. The two memorial sites have different points of focus: the fountains refer to a former everyday practice, while the monument commemorates a clearly identified group on a specific date.
The community celebrates the feast day of Saint Mamas on 2 September with a procession carrying his icon. The saint is thus encountered not only in the churches and their works of art, but also in a tradition associated with his feast day.
Mountain Biking Routes from Alaminos Beach
Two rides are named “Alaminos Mountain Biking Demanding” and “Alaminos Mountain Biking Moderate”; both start at Alaminos Beach. From there, the Moderate route continues towards Mazotos and Alethriko. These give you concrete points of comparison for planning your route: the shared starting point and the direction taken by this route. The route names distinguish the two options, without requiring you to fit the village’s cultural sites into the same itinerary.
Alaminos offers two distinct perspectives for planning a trip: its history of buildings, churches and the village on the one hand, and its named mountain biking routes on the other. Within the cultural history, the approximate construction dates help distinguish the old church and Koulas from the main church, completed in 1992. The icon adds to this picture through its depiction and its transfer from the older church; the fountains and monument point to other aspects of the village’s history. If you consider culture and cycling as separate interests, you can use these local attractions to guide your travel plans.
