Oroklini Lake is a distinctive natural highlight of Voroklini. The area also has old quarters, a local trail tradition and a coastal reef nearby. These features offer different points of interest: birdlife is the lake’s defining feature, while cultural heritage and activities on the water appeal to other interests. The details below will help you decide how the area fits your travel plans.

Birdlife at Oroklini Lake

The lake lies in the heart of the community and is considered Cyprus’s most important nesting site for the black-winged stilt. It is also the only place in Cyprus where the red-crested pochard breeds. The black-winged stilt and the spur-winged lapwing are the two threatened species that nest there in significant numbers. The lake’s importance for the black-winged stilt lies in its role as a nesting site; for the red-crested pochard, it is the only breeding site in Cyprus. For nature enthusiasts, the lake is therefore a clear focal point, distinct from Voroklini’s cultural attractions.

Trail, tradition and picnic area

On the descending trail, there is a rock face bearing human footprints carved into the stone. According to local tradition, the Prophet Elias is said to have followed this trail. This attribution is part of local tradition. According to a 2021 local article, the circular “Παθκιές του Αγίου” trail starts and ends at the Oroklini picnic area. Check the current condition of the trail before setting out.

A 2021 article lists several picnic tables, a barbecue, a double water tap, and a children’s playground with a slide and swings at the picnic area. If you plan to use these facilities, check their current condition before your visit. This lets you take the facilities into account when planning without assuming they will be unchanged.

The offshore reef

The natural, circular Dorida reef is in the vicinity of Voroklini, 600 metres off the coast and outside the village itself. It can be reached by boat. Its shallow water is suitable for snorkelling and leisurely recreational dives. Unlike Oroklini Lake, whose importance as a breeding site is the main focus, Dorida offers activities on the water. Boat access is an important difference to consider when planning: the lake is of interest for its birdlife, while the reef is for snorkelling or diving off the coast.

Old quarters and choosing a hotel

Voroklini’s old quarters include buildings dating from before 1882. They offer another cultural point of interest alongside the local trail tradition. Together with the lake and reef, they provide a range of themes for a stay, without reducing nature and culture to the same experience.

When looking for a hotel in Voroklini, you can use these differences to help you choose. First decide whether the lake and its birdlife, the old quarters and trail tradition, or the reef is the deciding factor.
