Lovorno connects the history of an ancient aqueduct with church architecture and regional traditions. The aqueduct route passes through Lovorno between Ljuta and Pridvorje. The village is especially interesting for travelers who want to explore archaeological traces and how they fit into the landscape.
The Ancient Aqueduct in the Village Landscape
Lovorno is home to the best-preserved section of the Epidaurian water supply system. Its surviving profile shows that the channel was vaulted. Thus, both the route of the ancient water supply and its construction form part of the village’s historic character. The Church of Velika Gospa is located near the aqueduct route and above a fertile field. Fragments of tegula tiles and building materials have been found around the church. During a reconstruction of the church in the early 20th century, an ancient funerary stele was excavated there; it is rectangular and made of limestone.
Three Churches, Different Histories
Lovorno has three churches: St. Anne, St. Elijah, and Velika Gospa. The Church of St. Anne, with its cemetery, is a single-nave Baroque building with a bell gable, porch, and apse. It is located in upper Lovorno and was built in the 16th or 17th century. Stećci depicting a shield and sword are associated with the Church of St. Elijah. These stećci belong to a medieval funerary tradition that is usually dated to the 14th and 15th centuries in Konavle.
Religious traditions also shape Lovorno: two brotherhoods are dedicated to St. Anne and Velika Gospa. The Velika Gospa procession is considered an old custom of Konavle. At the 2025 celebration, it led from the parish church of St. Sergius and St. Bacchus to the Church of Velika Gospa.
