A fertile valley, steep cliffs and historic sites define Konavle Municipality. The valley stretches up to 35 kilometres in length and up to 12 kilometres in width. On its mountain side are the slopes of Snježnica, which reaches 1,234 metres, and Bjelotina. On the seaward side, cliffs stretch from the port of Cavtat through Molunat to the Prevlaka Peninsula and Cape Oštro. These varied landscapes provide a clear framework for exploring Konavle.
Fortresses, mills and protected sites
Sokol Fort is an important fortress dating from the time of the Republic of Ragusa. It was built on the site of an earlier Illyrian and Roman fortification. From Sokol Fort and the churchyard of Our Lady of Sokol, you can enjoy views across all of Konavle. The historic site and the view combine architectural history with a broad outlook over the landscape.
On the Ljuta River, a mill complex tells the story of different forms of water power: it includes eight watermills for flour, two for oil and three fulling mills. The system of so-called lower mills was built after 1550 and has been preserved to this day. The forms of protection also vary: the source and upper course of the Ljuta are protected by the state as a nature park, while the watermill is protected as a cultural monument.
Archaeological and cultural traces
Močići is home to a mithraeum, a sanctuary dedicated to the ancient god Mithras. His cult was widespread in the region from the 2nd to the 4th century. Another historic centre is Pridvorje: the Franciscan monastery and the Church of Saint Blaise were built between 1423 and 1429 in the style of the early Dubrovnik Renaissance. The monastery was a place of pilgrimage and housed a significant collection of sacred art.
Stone necropolises are particularly numerous near the Church of Saint Barbara in Dunave and in Mihanići, Gabrila, Brotnice and Pridvorje. At the Museum of the Konavle Region in Čilipi, you can discover another aspect of the area’s cultural heritage: it houses around 500 ethnological objects. These include traditional costumes, embroidery and other textile works, as well as jewellery, weapons, musical instruments and everyday items. The Glavić House is an original Konavle house dating back around 400 years and is listed as a cultural monument in the national register of monuments.
Hiking trails with different destinations
The Cavtat–Močići–Čilipi hiking trail is eight kilometres long and runs through the coastal landscape of Konavle. Side trails lead from it to swimming spots on the cliffs. The Konavoske Stijene educational trail starts in Popovići and runs for about four kilometres above the cliffs. These distances give you two specific points of reference for planning; check trail conditions locally.
The Ronald Brown Trail starts in Gornji Obod and continues to the summit of Stražišće, at an elevation of 791 metres. Endemic plant species and protected animal species are found along the trail. From the summit, panoramic views extend across Cavtat, Konavle, Župa and Dubrovnik. In addition to the stated elevation, this trail offers its own perspective on the surrounding landscape.
More experiences along the coast and near the airport
Kojan Koral in Popovići organises half-day horse rides above the Konavle cliffs, with views of the Adriatic. Near Cavtat are underwater archaeological sites containing more than 1,800 amphorae and pithoi from the 1st century BC and the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Near Molunat lies the wreck of the Austro-Hungarian cruiser Kaiser, at a depth of 30 to 42 metres. Check access and conditions in advance for dive sites.
Dubrovnik Airport is in Čilipi, five kilometres from Cavtat. If you use this distance as a reference for planning your trip, check the latest information about the airport and local transport before travelling.
