Čilipi combines a distinctive cultural attraction with two very different ways to explore the area on foot or by bike. In the centre of the village is the Konavle Region Museum, alongside an eight-kilometre hiking trail and a signposted 25-kilometre cycling route. You can choose whether history, folklore or outdoor activity will be the focus of your stay.
Museum, Church and Sunday Folklore
The Konavle Region Museum is located in the centre of Čilipi in a former village treasury building dating from 1909. Its ethnographic collection conveys material and intangible traces of traditional life in Konavle. Exhibits include traditional costumes, embroidery and textile crafts, jewellery, weapons, musical instruments, paintings, photographs and household objects; embroidery samples showcase traditional needlework. The ground floor also hosts temporary exhibitions on Konavle’s material and intangible heritage. The museum’s programme also includes lectures, educational activities, publications and multimedia. Check current visiting arrangements and the exhibition calendar before your visit.
St Nicholas Church dates from the 19th century, and its bell tower from 1898. Since 1967, Sunday folklore performances have been held in the square in front of the church, from Palm Sunday until the end of October. After Sunday Mass at 11:15 a.m., KUD Čilipi presents Konavle customs through song and dance. As this is a seasonal programme, check the current annual calendar before planning your visit.
Hiking or Cycling
The Cavtat–Močići–Čilipi hiking trail is eight kilometres long and passes through the coastal landscape of Konavle. Its relatively even elevation profile makes it suitable for recreational hikers. Side trails lead to swimming spots on the Konavle cliffs; access and conditions may vary seasonally. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Another option is the signposted 25-kilometre cycling route. It starts in Čilipi’s main square and passes through Gruda, Ljuta and Pridvorje. The route combines asphalt and gravel and includes around 270 metres of elevation gain; it is considered suitable for trekking and mountain bikes. The two routes differ not only in how you travel: the hiking trail is defined by its eight kilometres and relatively even elevation profile, while the cycling route is longer, has a mix of surfaces and includes the stated elevation gain.
Rural Experiences and the Wider Region
Seoska kuća in Čilipi presents rural life with a garden, agricultural produce, domestic animals, a small ethnographic museum and a wine cellar. According to its own description, Seoska kuća’s dishes draw on Konavle traditions and are prepared with fresh local ingredients, preferably home-grown, using family recipes. Check before travelling whether the establishment is currently open; the menu and availability may change.
In the wider destination of Općina Konavle, a fertile valley stretches up to 35 kilometres long and up to 12 kilometres wide. Regional hiking options include the Ronald Brown Trail, which starts in Gornji Obod and leads to the summit of Stražišće at 791 metres. From there, the panoramic view extends over Cavtat, Konavle, Župa and Dubrovnik. The Konavoske stijene educational trail starts in Popovići and runs for around four kilometres above the Konavle cliffs. The routes can be distinguished by their respective features: the Ronald Brown Trail is defined by its summit and panorama, while the educational trail is defined by its length and its course above the cliffs.
Čilipi lies on the southwestern edge of the Konavle Field at an altitude of 184 metres. Dubrovnik Airport is near the village; check current transport connections before travelling.
