Trpinja reveals itself through its waterways, Baroque church architecture and the history of several cultural events. The Municipality of Trpinja is located in the historic region of Slavonia, in the northwest of Vukovar-Srijem County and 14 km north of Vukovar. It lies along the Vukovar–Osijek and Vukovar–Vinkovci transport corridors.
Rivers, Lowlands and Nature Protection
The municipality is part of the typical Pannonian lowlands and has a temperate continental climate. The Vuka River flows through the area for 8 km; the Bobotski Canal stretches for 20 km through the municipality. Both waterways provide concrete geographical reference points for the landscape. The Natura 2000 site HR2001045 Trpinja is also here: it covers 5.1567 ha and is designated as a protected area for species and habitat types.
Archaeological Site and Church Architecture
The archaeological site of Pašnjak pod selom in Bršadin is designated as immovable cultural property within the municipality. It lies south of the centre of Bršadin, in the riverbed of the Vuka. The river is therefore not only a feature of the landscape, but also part of the description of the site's location.
The churches are distinguished by their locations and construction dates. In Bobota, the Church of the Great Martyr George (Crkva Velikomučenika Georgija) was built in 1789; it, too, is designated as immovable cultural property. The Church of the Ascension of the Lord (Crkva Vaznesenja Gospodnjeg) in Trpinja dates from 1755 and was built in the late Baroque style. It is a single-nave building with a semicircular apse and a bell tower that projects from the main façade like a risalit. “Single-nave” means that the church has one nave; an apse is the semicircular end of the church interior. “Like a risalit” describes the tower projecting from the plane of the façade. In this way, the description of the church in Trpinja covers not only its construction date, but also the form of the building in greater detail.
Cultural Events in Several Places
The 2020 municipal strategy describes the three-day Međunarodni Vidovdanski sabor in Bobota as an event that had been held annually in June since 1981 by the cultural and artistic association “Đoko Patković”. The programme also included the preparation of traditional dishes. If you would like to combine your trip with this festival, check the latest dates in advance.
The same strategy describes an annual exhibition of handicrafts and antiques held in Bobota, Trpinja and Bršadin since 2013. It included demonstration workshops for all exhibition visitors, as well as presentations of old tools and crafts. According to the strategy, the folklore event “Đeram – deca čuvari tradicije” had been held annually in Trpinja and Bršadin since 2016. This international folklore event included programme exchanges with groups from neighbouring countries and at least one guest performance each year.
The event descriptions from that period also feature theatre and music. The Međunarodni susreti dramskih amatera – MESDAM in Pačetin was a theatre event held annually since 2003 by the cultural and artistic association “Branko Radičević”. The “Letnji koncert povodom završetka radne sezone” in Bršadin had been held annually since 2008. In addition to the host, groups from the region, abroad and the local community performed; the municipal strategy described the concert as internationally significant for the municipality. Check the latest dates if any of these events are important to your travel plans.
