Archaeological Traces and the Danube
Vučedol archaeological site lies four kilometres downstream from Vukovar. The Museum of Vučedol Culture is located at an archaeological site on the banks of the Danube in Vukovar-Srijem County and conveys its historical and archaeological significance through contemporary interpretation. Here, you can encounter both archaeological sites and a modern form of interpretation.
Wine and Culture in Ilok
Almost all wineries on the Iločka Wine Route are concentrated in the settlement of Ilok. You can explore it on foot or on the Iločki podrumi tourist train; it is best to confirm that the train is operating before your trip. At the Old Cellars next to Odescalchi Castle, hosts guide visitors through parts of the cellar complex and organise wine tastings. You may need to arrange a visit in advance. The castle is now home to the Ilok City Museum and the city gallery. The traditional Iločko ljeto also takes place in Ilok. It helps preserve and promote the culture, language and traditions of the Slovak national minority.
Birdwatching and Trails by the Water
The Nijemci Birdwatching Centre covers several locations, including the Arboretum Park. Another location within the centre is the Sopotac excursion site. There, you will find birdwatching towers as well as binoculars, telescopes and field guides. The Sveta Katarina boat travels along the Bosut from Arboretum Park to Sopotac; it may operate seasonally. If you would like to include the boat in your exploration, check in advance whether it is running during your travel dates. The Virovi educational trail is in the Otok area and is 2,727 metres long. For cycling, the Srijem cycling route connects the southern and northeastern parts of the county and links up with EuroVelo 6, known as the Danube Route. As trail conditions can change, it is worth checking the latest route information before setting out.
Museums and Distinctive Cultural Stories
In Vinkovci, the city museum is considered a Baroque architectural monument. Visitors can meet Ban Josip Šokčević there through a hologram. In Županja, the Stjepan Gruber Homeland Museum is housed in a 19th-century border guardhouse. This building is the only surviving example of Military Frontier architecture in Croatia.
Vukovar, too, brings together a range of cultural attractions: Eltz Castle houses the Vukovar City Museum. At the birthplace of chemist and Nobel laureate Lavoslav Ružička, a hologram offers an encounter with the Nobel laureate. The Vukovarsko nokturno thematic route links memorial sites to the Croatian War of Independence throughout the city. From the water tower, you can look out over Vukovar and the Danube.
On Foot, by Bike and Outdoors
At the Vukovo and Principovac viewpoints, two circular hiking trails wind through vineyards, pass Liska—the highest point at 297 metres—and return via Skandala to the starting point. The longer trail is 14 kilometres, and the shorter one is nine kilometres long. Another trail, 22 kilometres long, leads from Bapska to Principovac. These routes offer several precisely measured options for exploring the countryside, though the information provided does not specify how long a hike takes.
The Sopot archaeological park and excursion site, with its six Sopot houses, is connected to the centre of Vinkovci by a three-kilometre walking and cycling trail. In Vukovar, Adica Forest Park is recommended for nature experiences and active recreation. In the Kunjevci forest area, an excursion by eco-vehicles takes you into the habitat of roe deer, fallow deer and red deer.
Forest, Recreation and the Seasons
The Bošnjaci Forestry Museum showcases the flora and fauna of the Spačva Basin and the tradition of organised forestry, with exhibits and historic tools. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. There are also various seasonal options for outdoor recreation: the Poloji excursion site has a sandy beach, sports facilities and children’s playgrounds; these facilities may be seasonal. Vukovarska Ada is a summer recreation area in Vukovar. Both offer a different kind of experience from museums, the wine route or hiking trails, with Poloji providing specific recreational facilities and summer use being the main feature of Vukovarska Ada.
