The Municipality of Nuštar lies in the far east of Vukovar-Srijem County, between Vinkovci and Vukovar. Nuštar is also on the Vinkovci–Vukovar road and railway line. Sacred architecture, the Gosseau-Sandor-Khuen Castle and its estate history, archaeological finds, and the landscape of the Vuka Valley offer different points of interest when planning a trip. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether your stay will be shaped by an event date or by an interest in architectural history, archaeology, or the landscape.
Churches and architectural history
The Parish Church of Duha Svetoga in Nuštar can be dated by three milestones: the tower dates from 1840, the nave was built in 1860, and the church has organs made by G. Peter Titza in Vienna in 1863. This timeline distinguishes the building’s history from its furnishings. In Marinci, the new Church of Crkva Male Gospe was completed and blessed on 8 September 2005. In Cerić, the new Church of Crkva sv. Katarine was completed in 2008, following the destruction of the earlier church in 1993. The churches thus reflect different periods: construction and furnishing dates in Nuštar, and more recent completion dates in Marinci and Cerić.
Castle and estate history
The building history of Gosseau-Sandor-Khuen Castle begins with its oldest Baroque section, built by Count Maximilian Eugen Gosseau d’Heneff. The castle chapel served as Nuštar’s parish church until 1860. Changes to the estate grounds are also part of the castle’s history: almost the entire area behind the castle was converted into a large park. A former grain store in the estate park was converted into a stable, and a circular riding arena was created in front of it. The historical details thus range from the person associated with the oldest Baroque section to the former uses and transformations of the estate grounds.
The Vuka Valley and archaeological finds
Nuštar lies in the Vuka Valley. The former aristocratic hunting ground of Zverinjak is located on a large island surrounded by a marshy old meander of the Vuka. The valley describes Nuštar’s setting, while Zverinjak is notable for a specific landform featuring an island and a meander.
Archaeological details also give the area a distinct historical focus. At the Nuštar–Dvorac site, a child aged between zero and five was buried with a complete, 39-piece belt set. A digital search by grave number is available for the Avar site at Nuštar. Grave goods in grave 102 include ceramic vessels and an iron ring. The two examples highlight different details: the age and complete belt set of one burial, and specific grave goods from a single grave.
