Birdwatching in the arboretum, a themed trail to Sopotac and local history in the church and museum give Nijemci a range of different attractions. You can shape your trip around your interests: nature and river landscapes, the history of the town or the cuisine of Srijem.
Arboretum and Sopotac
In the centre of Nijemci, the arboretum is a garden on the banks of the Bosut. Native ornamental and medicinal plants, paths and seating areas shape the garden; its features include a pavilion, a fountain and a pergola. It is a place to relax and watch birds, while its appearance changes with the seasons.
The excursion destination Sopotac focuses more on outdoor activities. There are opportunities for birdwatching and fishing, a themed children’s playground, a landing stage on the water for boats, and parking. Some facilities may change. From Nijemci, Sopotac can be reached by boat, car, bus, bicycle, carriage, on horseback or on foot.
A marked themed hiking route connects the centre of Nijemci with Sopotac. It is about 3.5 kilometres long; around 30 information boards and six Smart Benches feature the flora and fauna of Srijem. Check the condition of the route locally. River tourism on the Bosut and SpaÄŤva also includes a trip on the St Catherine catamaran from Arboretum Park to the Sopotac excursion destination. Schedules may change; check in advance when the trip runs.
You can organise nature watching, local history and activities on the water around your interests.
Local history and regional cuisine
The central parish church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria is a Baroque church dating from the 14th century. It stands on the banks of the Bosut at the prehistoric archaeological site of Gradina. Traces of Roman architecture and graves associated with the Bijelo-Brdo culture have been found beneath the church. Access to archaeological remains may be restricted.
The “Luka Natali” local history museum is located in the pastoral centre of the Nijemci parish and presents the history of the town. It includes a traditional-style ethnographic room and a collection of more than 700 objects of cultural, historical and ethnographic interest. Check visiting hours in advance, as opening arrangements may vary.
The cuisine also reflects Srijem: Nijemci and the surrounding villages are associated with ÄŤvarci, kulen and kulenova seka, sausages made from the black Slavonian pig, ajvar, cheese, bread, preserves and honey. Dishes include ÄŤobanac, fish stew, carp and game; seasonal vegetables add to the selection. What visitors actually find depends on the hosts and the season.
