Museums: Architecture, History and Remembrance

The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes is housed in a neoclassical building with Art Nouveau elements. It was declared a Historic Monument by D.S. 1290 on December 30, 1976. At the Museo de Arte Precolombino, a different feature of the building is a point of reference: the permanent exhibition is on the second floor. This brings together an architectural perspective on one building and the location of a permanent exhibition in another.

The Museo Nacional de Historia Natural was founded by Claudio Gay on September 14, 1830, and is one of the oldest museums in the Americas. The Museo de la Memoria y de los Derechos Humanos offers a different historical perspective: it covers the period from 1973 to 1990 in Chile and aims to show the human rights violations of that time so that they do not happen again. The two museums thus address different questions: the long history of a natural history institution and remembrance of human rights violations during a clearly defined period.

Casa Museo de Pablo Neruda “La Chascona” was declared a Historic Monument in 1990 for its outstanding architectural value and as a testament to the poet’s life in Chile. It houses Pablo Neruda’s collection of masks and his Nobel Prize in Literature. The Museo Interactivo Mirador (MIM) takes a different approach: its interactive spaces bring together science, art and technology. The range therefore extends from historic places and collections to an interactive way of exploring these subjects.
