Reserva Nacional Río Clarillo is located in the municipality of Pirque, Cordillera Province. It protects flora and fauna, including the bird species Comesebo, Fiofío and Ralladito, as well as predominantly Nearctic mammals from the dog, marten and cat families. The reserve has hiking trails, picnic areas for cold meals and an environmental information center. It protects high-mountain glaciers, the Colorado and Olivares rivers, native high-altitude flora and native fauna, particularly species with protected status. On an urban scale, there is Parque Metropolitano de Santiago: the 737-hectare urban park extends across Providencia, Recoleta, Huechuraba and Vitacura. In the Andes, Cajón del Maipo offers a different view of the landscape. Shaped by the Andes, the valley is crossed by the Río Maipo; within it, the turquoise Embalse El Yeso lies at an elevation of 2,500 meters. Places of Culture and History
San José de Maipo combines its mountain setting at the foot of the Andes with a historic townscape: around the Plaza de Armas, you will find classic architecture and the heritage-listed church; local cuisine is also part of the town's character. In Alto Jahuel, in the municipality of Buin, Museo Andino is located at Camino Padre Hurtado 0695. Opened in 2006 by Fundación Claro Vial, its collection comprises more than 3,000 archaeological pieces representing Chilean and American history. The museum thus offers a distinct cultural focus alongside the region's landscapes and protected areas.
Also in Alto Jahuel, Buin, Viña Santa Rita is open to visitors. Here, Chilean wine tradition, culture and gastronomy come together with the history of Chile in a unique natural setting. The experience differs from the collection at Museo Andino: here the focus is on wine tradition and gastronomy in connection with Chilean history, while the museum focuses on archaeological pieces.
Planning Visits and Accommodation
The main route from Santiago to San José de Maipo is Ruta G-25, also known as Camino al Volcán; it starts at the end of Avenida La Florida. Buses and shared taxis connect Santiago with Cajón del Maipo. Check route and traffic information before your trip.
