Earthenware pottery, a route through cheesemaking and historic buildings shape the discoveries in Melipilla Province. Experiences range from crafts and cuisine in Pomaire to hiking, birdwatching and water activities. History also takes many forms here: in churches and manor houses, in a protected historic townscape and in a connection to Chilean naval history.

Pottery, Cuisine and Cheese

Pomaire is a small village of potters. Local artisans sell earthenware pottery on the main street. The craft is not just something to look at here: the pottery is sold right on the street. Traditional Chilean dishes such as pastel de choclo and empanadas are also available. Visitors interested in local cuisine can therefore find both artisan work and typical dishes in one place in Pomaire.

Other culinary traditions are associated with CuracavĂ, which is known for Chilean sweets and chicha. The Ruta del Queso focuses on something different: it takes visitors through the production process, from raising cattle to making cheese and other dairy products. For travelers who want to learn not only about the finished product but also how it is made, this process is the most interesting part. Visitors can take part in the Ruta del Queso in Melipilla.

Viña Chocalán offers guided tours with tastings and a wine-and-chocolate tour. Alongside pottery and dairy products, wine and chocolate are therefore also highlights in their own right.

Churches, Manor Houses and History

The Claustro de San AgustĂn de Melipilla was declared a historic monument on June 22, 1988, by Decree D.S. 283. The Catedral de Melipilla tells a longer story of construction at one site: it was inaugurated on April 30, 1992, and stands on the same site as the older vicariate church, which was built at the end of the 18th century. Two different historical periods can therefore be seen in one place.

In Alhué, the Iglesia de Alhué adds to the historic picture through its construction. It was completed in 1764. Its surviving architectural features include foundations made of river pebbles, adobe walls and a wooden roof with clay tiles. The Casona de la Hacienda de Alhué is also a historic monument. Its typical colonial architecture arranges the rooms around a central courtyard. Historic saddles and carriages are preserved in the wide corridors; inside, the house also preserves household items and a collection of weapons.

The Pueblo Villa de Alhué also has historic recognition: in 1983, it was designated a National Monument in the Zona Típica category. The town's Chilean traditions and the architectural value of its colonial-style buildings were key factors. The Antigua Casa de Policarpo Toro offers another historical connection. It was the residence of Chilean naval officer Policarpo Toro, who spearheaded the incorporation of Rapa Nui into Chilean sovereignty in 1888.

Hiking, Scenery and Water

At the Reserva Nacional RoblerĂa del Cobre de Loncha, visitor activities include hiking, observing flora and fauna, taking in panoramic views and learning about the environment. Nature observation here involves more than just the landscape. As specific facilities and access conditions may change, it is advisable to check the conditions before your visit.

Cerro HorcĂłn de Piedra offers a different kind of scenery: native forest grows on its slopes and along its trails. From the summit, you can see the sea and the Bay of San Antonio; at night, illuminated Santiago is also among the possible views. Laguna Esmeralda has areas for picnicking, swimming, sport fishing and birdwatching. Kayaks, family boats and stand-up paddleboards are available for rent there; availability may vary by season. Check in advance whether your preferred boat is available.

The activities offer different experiences: Laguna Esmeralda combines water sports with relaxation and birdwatching, while the Reserva Nacional RoblerĂa del Cobre de Loncha focuses on hiking and nature observation. For practical orientation, Ruta 68 is one of the main access roads to Melipilla Province.
