Yerbas Buenas brings its history to life in specific places: the Plaza de Armas, the Museo HistĂłrico, and its churches connect memories of 1813 with the development of the settlement and its architecture. The town also has a cultural complex offering folk workshops, seasonal events, and public cultural spaces. You can explore local history and cultural activities as distinct focuses of your stay.
Plaza, Museum, and Local History
The Plaza de Armas is one of the recommended places to visit in Yerbas Buenas. On the site of today’s plaza, the Spanish established their military camp during the Battle of Yerbas Buenas, also known as the “Sorpresa de Yerbas Buenas,” on April 27, 1813. The connection between the plaza and the battle makes the date tangible in a specific place.
The Museo HistĂłrico de Yerbas Buenas is housed in a historic building with adobe walls, a square brick floor, exposed beams, and a clay-tile roof. On the night of April 26, 1813, Spanish Brigadier Antonio Pareja, commander of the Royalist army, spent the night there. This also connects the building with a specific episode at a precisely identified location on the eve of the battle.
Today’s Parroquia Santa Cruz stands on the site of the community’s first church, built in 1785; the settlement of Yerbas Buenas developed around this church. The present-day Iglesia Santa Cruz was built in 1943. Its architecture combines traditional rural construction with Art Deco elements. The building includes a tower with a cross at its center and a spacious interior. The area around the Plaza de Armas and adjacent parts of the town were declared a Zona TĂpica by Decree D.S. 548 on July 28, 1987.
