Two hiking trails in the Maule Region represent very different time commitments: nine hours on the Sendero Enladrillado and 45 minutes on the Sendero Las Dunas. Other highlights include an endorheic lake, a photographic exhibition about local birdlife, a railway line with station traditions, and wineries offering tours and tastings. This mix offers different ways to experience the region’s landscapes, culture and pleasures.

Hiking trails with different time commitments

The Sendero Enladrillado in the Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay, in the municipality of San Clemente, is 11 kilometres long; its stated walking time is 9 hours, and it is rated as moderate. The Sendero Las Dunas in the Reserva Nacional Federico Albert in Chanco offers a different time commitment: the trail is 2 kilometres long, rated as easy and listed with a stated walking time of 45 minutes. The Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay also allows mountaineering activities. Seasonal hazards, access requirements and operating conditions for mountaineering activities may change; check the latest information before planning.

Water, birdlife and a remarkable tree

In the Reserva Nacional Federico Albert, the Sendero de Los Sentidos adds to the hiking options: it allows blind people to safely make their way through the area along the trail. In the Reserva Nacional Laguna Torca, in the municipality of Vichuquén, the lake system comprises Laguna Torca, Lago Vichuquén and Laguna de Agua Dulce. The latter has no surface outlet and is endorheic. An environmental information centre in the reserve features a photographic exhibition about the area’s birdlife. Another botanical highlight can be found in the Reserva Nacional Los Bellotos del Melado in Colbún, where the endemic Belloto del Sur (Beilschmiedia berteroana) grows naturally. The reserve is one of five known locations in Chile with small populations of this species, and is currently closed to the public.

Railway line and station traditions

The Ramal Talca-Constitución is an 88-kilometre, single-track railway line with a metre gauge between Talca and Constitución. Old traditions are preserved and shared with visitors at each station. The line’s technical features and the traditions at its stations offer different perspectives on the same railway branch. Visitor arrangements may change; check the current options at the stations before visiting.

Wineries in Maule and across Chile

Various wineries in the Valles del Maule y CuricĂł offer tours and tastings. The local gastronomy also invites you to linger for hours. Confirm the availability of individual wineries in advance. Across the wider travel destination of Chile, the Ruta del Vino stretches from Casablanca to Maule through the central valleys. It offers wine pairings, insights into winemaking and walks through vineyards. This nationwide context complements the specific wineries and wine regions you can discover in the Maule Region.
