San Clemente offers a clear contrast between urban cultural attractions and nearby nature destinations. In town, you’ll find a historic square as well as traditional festivals and markets; in the surrounding area, hiking trails and water sports sit alongside thermal waters and sport climbing. For planning your trip, it helps to set a simple priority: Would you mainly like to experience the town’s program of events or plan visits to different destinations in the surrounding area? Events have changing programs, and you should check current access conditions for individual nature destinations.

Cityscape, Culture, and Getting Around

Plaza de Armas “Froilán Silva” is located in town and dates back to 1874. Another place to visit is the Centro de Desarrollo e Informaciones Turísticas on Avenida Huamachuco, the city’s main street. It is housed in a restored former municipal market building and includes an information room, exhibition spaces, an auditorium, and staff to assist visitors. If you plan to use the center to help you find your way around, check its current offerings in advance.

The traditional “18 Chico” festival is celebrated in San Clemente for a month, with activities for the whole family. These include ramadas and fondas, a church service, a parade, and a civic ceremony. Dates and events may vary, so it’s worth checking the schedule for your travel dates.

The Expo Feria Pehuenche program includes traditional food and baked goods, as well as music, dance, handicrafts, and traditional games. The individual events vary from one edition to another.

Markets and Local Cuisine

The Feria Agrícola is held in the town center. Its listed hours are Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; check the current schedule before your visit. Fresh cow’s milk cheese is one of the market’s typical rural products. It is also sold along the road to Vilches near Cruce Corralones and on Ruta Paso Pehuenche. Availability may be seasonal.

At the costumbrista festivals held in San Clemente, you can also find flavored shaved ice with banana pieces and toasted flour. It is served on a plate or in small takeout containers. Whether it is available depends on the program for each festival.

Nature Destinations and Activities Nearby

Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay is nearby. It is located in the Región del Maule, in Talca Province and the municipality of San Clemente—not in the town itself. The access road passes San Clemente. Inside the reserve, long hiking trails lead to Enladrillado, Laguna El Alto, and Mirador Valle del Venado; shorter trails lead to Aliwenmahuida, Cerro El Peine, Concones, Mirador del Río, and Río Lircay. Access and seasonal closures may change, so check conditions before visiting.

At Lago ColbĂşn, 45 kilometers from San Clemente toward the Andes, you can enjoy water sports or spend a day at the beach. This makes the lake different from the hiking trails in the reserve: the focus here is on activities on the water, while the reserve has designated trail destinations.

Baños del Médano is located at kilometer 105 of Ruta Paso Pehuenche in the Andes. It has thermal waters and natural caves with sulfur-rich vapors, which are said to have healing properties. Facilities include cabins, camping and picnic areas, and basic products are sold there. Current offerings may vary.

Valle de Los CĂłndores is near Ruta Pehuenche. Its basalt cliffs are considered a major destination for sport climbers in South America. If climbing is your main focus, the valley offers a different experience from the lake, thermal waters, or hiking trails. Check local conditions and access.
