Large adobe houses and long corridors define Pueblo de Vichuquén; the Ruta Patrimonial begins at the Plaza de Armas. Here, you can encounter the town’s history through its architecture, museum, and twelve historic sites. For planning, the highlights can be divided into historic places in the center and crafts and nature activities across the municipality.

Adobe Houses and Local History

The preserved adobe houses are located on the small rise of Calle Comercio and on the slope of the nearest hill, now in the area of Arturo Prat and Balmaceda streets. On October 23, 1990, Pueblo de Vichuquén was designated a typical or picturesque protected area under Decree No. 677. In the historic center is Parque Colonial, a landmark inaugurated by MINVU in 2009.

The Museo Histórico de Vichuquén displays fossilized remains of a woman, found on the shore of Lago Vichuquén and dating from 2900 BC. The collection also includes stone and ceramic utensils attributed to the Inca Empire. It also features documents and objects from the colonial, independence, and republican periods, as well as items from the former church of Vichuquén, which was destroyed by fire in 1961.

Route, Church, and Crafts

A map of the historic town center is located at the Plaza de Armas, where the Ruta Patrimonial begins. It includes twelve historic sites. The square therefore serves as a landmark for starting the route and exploring the town.

The Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen was founded in 1580 and is located at Calle Comercio 260. The Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen procession travels from the Las Juntas sector near Quebrada de la Iglesia to the church of Vichuquén, accompanied by pífanos. The church’s location and the procession route highlight different aspects of the town’s religious history.

The craft fair in front of the Plaza de Armas features products made from ceramic, carved wood, stone, and coirón. If you would like to plan your visit around the fair, check the dates before your trip.

Crafts and Nature in the Municipality

In the municipality, the Ruta de Artesanía Indígena includes an outing to a vein of white clay, followed by the design and creation of a ceramic piece. The route also includes a visit to a Mapuche ruca, where mate and tortilla de rescoldo are sampled alongside Indigenous tales and stories from the area. If you plan to take part in this experience, confirm participation in advance.

Lago Vichuquén is used for recreational boating within the municipality. In the Uraco sector, the Ruta del Coirón is an initiative of the tourism office and coirón craftswomen, aimed at promoting the sector’s natural attractions. Reserva Laguna Torca includes a wooded area where native species such as swans, herons, and ducks can be observed.

The activities have different focuses: the Ruta de Artesanía Indígena centers on design, making, and storytelling, while Reserva Laguna Torca offers the chance to observe native bird species. Lago Vichuquén adds boating to the municipality’s recreational activities.
