The parish church on the plaza takes visitors through several periods in Sagrada Familia’s history: the new settlement was planned around the church of Santa Familia de Lontué; the church in the town was built in 1927 and destroyed by the 2010 earthquake; reconstruction was completed in 2019. Other features include the annual procession of the Virgen del Carmen, occasional cultural and festive events, and the wine tradition across the wider municipality. Together, these connect local history and community life as distinct but related themes.

Settlement History, Plaza and Church

The new settlement was planned around the church of Santa Familia de Lontué. The parish plaza was laid out so that it was equally distant from every end of the new settlement. The Plaza de la Santa Familia was reserved for community use. A 1930 proposal aimed to acquire the Plaza de la Sagrada Familia and install children’s play equipment there.

The church in the town was built in 1927. The earthquake of February 27, 2010, destroyed it; reconstruction was completed in 2019. Sagrada Familia is also distinguished by its distinctive architecture, which is associated with the colonial period.

Processions and Cultural Events

Religious tradition and more recent cultural events in Sagrada Familia belong to different periods. The traditional procession of the Virgen del Carmen takes place in the town every year, passing through the streets around the emblematic parish church on the plaza. In 2025, the plaza hosted the second Fiesta de la Cerveza, which drew hundreds of visitors. In 2026, an exhibition of old objects was held at the Teatro Municipal de Sagrada Familia, illustrating the history and administrative memory of the municipality. If you are planning your stay around a particular festival or exhibition, it is advisable to check the latest event dates.

Wine and Festivities Across the Municipality

Food and drink take visitors to the wider municipality. The Valle de Sagrada Familia is home to numerous vineyards; the area is associated with the “Sagrada Familia” designation of origin and invites visitors to sample local wines. In July 2024, the Fiesta de la Chicha took place in the Rincón de Mellado sector of the municipality of Sagrada Familia. The event included stalls serving typical dishes, local chicha and wines from the surrounding area, as well as traditional activities and folk performances. The culinary scene ranges from vineyards and wine tasting in the Valle to food, drinks and folklore at the Fiesta de la Chicha in Rincón de Mellado.

Townscape and Travel Planning

The streets of Sagrada Familia also have an unusual layout: some sections rise while others descend. This adds a distinctive spatial feature to the planned settlement. For travel planning, it helps to think of the town and municipality as different scales: the church, plaza and procession are associated with the town; the Valle de Sagrada Familia and Rincón de Mellado with the wider municipality. When looking for a holiday rental, you can choose your cultural focus according to whether you are more interested in local history or the municipality’s wine and festival themes.
