The locomotive in Plaza de Armas Arturo Prat was originally used to transport workers to Frigorífico Puerto Bories. In the city center, the Mural pueblos originarios commemorates Indigenous peoples and tells the story of the Kawésqar and Aónikenk. Together, these places showcase different historical highlights of Puerto Natales. The city is also considered a gateway to Parque Nacional Torres del Paine.

City History and Cultural Attractions

The Museo Histórico de Puerto Natales documents and presents the history of the Natales municipality, from the area's origins around 14,000 years ago to the 1930s. The Museo Histórico de la Municipalidad Natales offers a different perspective: its rooms include Nómades, Colonos, Vida Urbana, and Vida Rural. A virtual 360-degree tour takes visitors through the premises. The room names refer to different subject areas—from nomadic ways of life and settlement history to urban and rural life.

Espacio Cultural Natalis complements the museums with film series, art workshops, exhibitions, and cultural education programs. Its cultural program spans film and visual arts as well as workshops and educational activities. The 34th edition of the Festival Costumbrista Chilote in Puerto Natales also offered two days of music, dance, and traditional cuisine.

City Views and Nature Destinations

Along Costanera Pedro Montt, visitors can enjoy views of Seno Última Esperanza and the Patagonian Andes. In the city center, the Mural pueblos originarios highlights a different aspect, while the locomotive in Plaza de Armas Arturo Prat recalls the labor history of Frigorífico Puerto Bories. These places represent different aspects of a stay in Puerto Natales: city history, cultural remembrance, and scenic views.

Monumento Natural Cueva del Milodón lies 25 km north of Puerto Natales and is part of Chile's Sistema Nacional de Áreas Silvestres Protegidas. The cave is scientifically significant because remains of the extinct Darwin's ground sloth (Mylodon darwini) were found there. It is also archaeologically important because people lived there around 12,000 years ago. The Cueva Grande trail was designed for people with reduced mobility; with a wheelchair and assistance, it can be used as far as the viewpoint inside the cave.

Parque Nacional Torres del Paine is in the wider Última Esperanza area, not within Puerto Natales. Ecotourism activities offered there include camping, hiking, mountaineering, boat trips, river trips, glacier crossings, and horseback riding. Alongside activities on foot, the options include experiences on the water and in the mountain landscape.

Plan Your Arrival and Stay

The road from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales follows Ruta 9, covers about 250 km, and takes approximately three hours. You can travel the route by intercity bus. Aeródromo Teniente Julio Gallardo (PNT) offers seasonal direct flights from Santiago; check flight schedules before traveling. The trip from downtown Puerto Natales to the airport takes about 15 minutes.

Another way to get there is by ferry from Puerto Montt via the Ruta de los Canales. Check the schedule and availability before your trip. Consider whether you plan to explore mainly the city or also include nature destinations outside the city in your stay.
