The Cueva del Milodón is archaeologically significant: early people in Patagonia lived there approximately 12,000 years ago. The Parque Nacional Bernardo O’Higgins offers a different sense of scale. Most of the park lies in the province; Campo de Hielo Sur, Campo de Hielo Dr. Juan Bruggen, and Campo de Hielo Patagónico cover a combined 1,000,500 hectares. Discoveries here therefore lead from a single archaeological site to landscapes whose vastness is expressed in expanses of ice.

Cueva del Milodón: Archaeology and Visitor Information

The Monumento Natural Cueva del Milodón combines archaeological significance with practical visitor facilities. It has an environmental information center, restrooms, picnic areas, and trails; souvenirs and snacks are also sold there. The trail to Cueva Grande was designed for people with reduced mobility. Those interested in Patagonia’s early settlement will find a place here where history reaching back approximately 12,000 years meets a visit to a natural monument.

From Puerto Natales, the route follows Ruta 9 Norte for 17 kilometers to the Milodón-Cerro Castillo turnoff. From there, Ruta Y-290 continues for another 8 kilometers to the monument’s parking lot and entrance. Check road conditions before setting out.

Torres del Paine: Steppe, Forest, and Glaciers

In the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, Patagonian steppe, dense lenga forests, and the ice masses of Campo de Hielo Sur come together. The park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The range of possible activities is just as broad: camping, hiking, mountaineering, boating, river trips, glacier crossings, horseback riding, and documentary filmmaking. The scenery and activities are all there, without any one visit needing to encompass every facet of the park.

Puerto Natales is the main gateway to the park. Buses leave daily from the bus terminal for the Laguna Amarga, Sarmiento, and Serrano entrances; the journey takes approximately two hours. Since schedules and services should be checked before traveling, it is worth planning around the current connections before deciding on your visits to the park.

The Glaciar Grey is a destination in its own right within the park. It begins in the Campos de Hielo Sur and advances 28 kilometers to the lake of the same name, where it breaks into blue icebergs. The ice fronts reach a height of 30 meters. You can approach them by boat or walk on the ice with expert guides. From Puerto Natales, it is approximately 100 kilometers, or around two hours, via the park’s internal roads to the Lago Grey sector. A three-hour boat trip to the ice fronts departs from Hotel Lago Grey. Check the conditions for the trip and planned activities in advance.

Fjords and Islands: Access by Water

The Parque Nacional Bernardo O’Higgins can also be explored by boat from Puerto Natales. Full-day tours typically depart from Puerto Bories and travel through the fjords to the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers. You need to reserve your place in advance for a full-day tour; confirm the departure and availability in good time.

Unlike the park access points mentioned above, the Parque Nacional Kawésqar can only be reached by sea. Possible starting points include Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, and Puerto Montt. The park has no visitor services or infrastructure for public use. Take these conditions into account when planning and check the latest information before setting out.

The Bien Nacional Protegido Archipiélago Madre de Dios comprises 54 islands north of the 50th parallel south and immediately south of the Trinidad Channel. This area is also accessible only by sea; a one-day trip from Puerto Natales is listed. A maritime expedition there requires expert planning. The two destinations show that “accessible by sea” does not automatically mean the same level of effort to reach.

Puerto Natales as a Gateway and Culinary Hub

Puerto Natales is the provincial capital and an important starting point for the access routes mentioned above. Seasonal direct flights serve Aeródromo Teniente Julio Gallardo. Alternatively, the 250-kilometer drive from Punta Arenas along Ruta 9 takes approximately three hours; there is also a ferry connection from Puerto Montt. Since flight and ferry services can vary seasonally or operationally, check connections before traveling.

Puerto Natales also has its own culinary character: its cuisine is known for specializing in lamb and king crab. Together with the different routes to the cave, glacier, park, and islands, this makes the provincial capital a practical part of trip planning, without limiting exploration to just one part of the province.
