Negrete combines a distinct town center with activities and traditions found across the municipality. The town is home to the Plaza de Armas; river excursions, festivals, and local products are associated with the municipality of Negrete. The range of themes thus extends from a spacious plaza to a broader cultural history.
The Plaza de Armas in the town of Negrete
The Plaza de Armas covers more than 14,500 square meters and is designed to be accessible. People with disabilities can use it in accordance with national regulations. The plaza includes an amphitheater and restrooms. Trees and green spaces were preserved in the redesign, which was welcomed in February 2024. The plaza therefore offers a specific starting point if you want to explore Negrete itself, combining a large open area with the facilities mentioned above.
Cheese, honey, and seasonal festivals
Several family-run cheese dairies in the municipality produce fresh and aged cheese. They use traditional techniques passed down through generations and linked to a local identity. Honey is also produced locally: Numerous beekeepers are members of APINEG (Asociación de Apicultores de Negrete). They produce honey that the municipality describes as regionally recognized.
Both products are featured in the name of the Feria Costumbrista del Queso y la Miel, which the municipality has held since 2022. It takes place in August, is considered one of the municipality’s most important tourist and productive attractions, and brings local producers together with visitors from across the region. A tourism inventory from May 2021 also describes the Fiesta del Choclo, held during the summer season in January. The festival features corn dishes, as well as exhibitions of typical foods and handicrafts. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the specific event date in advance.
River activities and summer program
In the municipality of Negrete, excursions are taken along the banks of the Río Biobío with the Agrupación de Boteros. Sport fishing is also among the municipality’s established tourist activities. The “Tardes de Río” are part of the summer activities and combine sports with outdoor recreation. Cultural afternoons include urban artistic performances, cinema, and other community activities. This brings together a variety of interests: the river and sports on one hand, community cultural offerings on the other. For summer programs, check the relevant dates before adding a specific event to your plans.
The municipality’s history and handicrafts
The settlement of Negrete is thought to have originated with Fort San Francisco de Borja, built on Cerro Marimán in 1613. Governor Alonso de Ribera had ordered its construction. The municipality’s history is also marked by the coexistence of Indigenous peoples and settlers. The 1793 Parliament of Negrete between Spanish and Mapuche authorities is described as a decisive diplomatic link for the region.
A tourism inventory from May 2021 traces the municipality’s basket weaving tradition to Indigenous origins. Chupón and coirón are used for the woven work. The same inventory describes the Trafkintu as a traditional activity in which healers exchange seeds, plants, and agricultural products. These customs and local production add craft and community dimensions to the picture of Negrete, extending beyond the town center.
