Railway Heritage in San Rosendo and Yumbel

Paseo Ferroviario de San Rosendo includes an amphitheater, a children's play area, a historical walking tour and an amenities area. It complements the San Rosendo railway complex, which was declared a National Monument in the Historic Monument category on May 24, 2023.

Estación Yumbel also tells the story of the province's railway history. It opened in 1873 as part of the Curicó–Talcahuano–Chillán and Angol railway lines and developed into an important trading center with shops and small businesses. The station's structure was damaged in 2010. Santuario de San Sebastián is also located in central Yumbel, opposite Plaza de Armas.

Festivals and Traditions in Yumbel

Festividad de San Sebastián takes place every year on January 20 and March 20. On these dates, Yumbel welcomes hundreds of pilgrims from across Chile. If you plan your trip around the celebrations, it's a good idea to check the latest schedule.

Trilla a Yegua Suelta takes place in January, giving visitors and residents the opportunity to learn about the full process of corta, emparva and trilla. In October, Medieval Fest features historical reenactments, artistic performances, combat demonstrations, music and dances from the era. At Muestra Campesina, more than 180 exhibitors present agricultural products, traditional cuisine and handicrafts. Programs and dates may change; check the latest information before your trip. The number of exhibitors at Muestra Campesina may also vary.

Wine-Growing History in the Broader Bío-Bío Destination

The broader Bío-Bío destination has a wine-growing history spanning more than 400 years in the Biobío Valley. Jesuit missionaries planted the first País vines in historic villages such as Millapoa, Yumbel and San Rosendo. San Rosendo is considered the birthplace of South America's oldest Malbec; it has 160-year-old vines and award-winning wines. This regional perspective adds another strand of cultural history to the province's railway and festival traditions.
