Vilcún combines cultural events on the Plaza de Armas with offerings in rural sectors and nature experiences throughout the municipality. When planning, it is useful to distinguish between the town and the municipality: Expo Lanas takes place on the Plaza de Armas, while the Ruta del Telar is based in the rural sector of Llamuco. Parque Nacional Conguillío is also not located solely in Vilcún; it extends across several municipalities.

Getting your bearings and traveling to the national park

Vilcún’s tourism department gathers and shares information about tourism services and attractions, both digitally and in person. Its office is listed at Miraflores 403 in Vilcún. If you plan to seek information in person, check the current contact options beforehand. An updated provider database covers accommodation, food and drink, activities, and other services for visitors and residents. Individual providers and their availability may change; check specific offers before your trip.

For the western entrance to Parque Nacional Conguillío, the route described runs from Temuco through Cajón, Vilcún, and Cherquenco to the Los Paraguas sector. This sequence places Vilcún along the access corridor, not at the location of the entire park. In the area within the municipality, food is sold and kayaks and boats are rented out in summer. Cabins, campsites, and picnic areas remain open until the middle of autumn, depending on weather conditions. If you plan to use these facilities, check current operating and weather conditions.

Volcanic landscapes and nature watching

Laguna Amarilla is a small volcanic lake in the municipality of Vilcún. It lies at the foot of a massif of igneous rock formed from ancient lava flows from the Llaima volcano. More recent lava flows dammed water at a fissure extending from the volcano’s slope. The lake’s formation thus illustrates the connection between volcanic activity and the shape of the landscape.

Salto Lan Lan is also in the municipality: the waterfall is 26 meters high and lies on three ancient Llaima lava flows. The two sites illustrate different geological processes: Laguna Amarilla is about dammed water, while Salto Lan Lan is a waterfall on older lava flows. The Kütralkura portal lists eleven geosites in the municipality of Vilcún. Since the catalog may change, check the current selection if you plan to visit specific geological sites.

Sendero El Ermitaño offers a different perspective: it is a remnant of native forest in the municipality. There, visitors can observe birds, flora, and fungi with guides and specialists. This guided nature watching differs from the geological focus of the geosites: the emphasis here is on the forest and biodiversity.

Festivals and cultural insights

Expo Lanas takes place every year on the Plaza de Armas in Vilcún and brings together more than 30 entrepreneurs who keep rural traditions and crafts alive. It also recognizes the contribution of rural women to preserving Mapuche textile traditions and local identity. If you want to combine the fair with a trip, check the dates for that year’s edition in advance.

Festival Kütralkura takes place annually in the municipality of Vilcún. The fourth edition, in 2024, featured outdoor activities, interactive exhibitions, local product sales, and live music. Festival de las Aves is also an annual event held in the municipality every November. Its program includes guided outings, educational activities, and opportunities to meet school groups and families. For both events, it is advisable to check the dates for the year you plan to travel.

Mapuche weaving in the rural sector

The Ruta del Telar in the rural sector of Llamuco is a Mapuche cultural tourism route. Craftswomen welcome visitors into their rukas, where they share their history and traditions and demonstrate weaving skills passed down through generations. The focus is on personal encounters and artisanal knowledge, not simply on a list of products.

In Llamuco Bajo, Pulil Domo offers Mapuche woven items such as blankets, table runners, and placemats, as well as dishes such as chicken casserole, tortilla, muday, and catuto. Textile crafts and Mapuche cuisine are presented side by side. Contact them directly about current visiting arrangements before planning your visit.
