Vast distances and long periods of time

From Piedra del Águila, the view stretches across about 215 km of Chile’s width. The viewpoint is at an altitude of 1,460 m in Parque Nacional Nahuelbuta. The park has remained almost unchanged for more than 10,000 years. The view and the length of time it has been preserved give you two different ways to experience the Araucanía Region: here, the focus is both on a broad perspective and on the long-term preservation of the park.

The UNESCO Global Geopark Kütralkura is located in the Araucanía Region and covers 8,053 km². It was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2019. The recognition acknowledges efforts to base environmental protection and regional development on both traditional Mapuche knowledge and scientific findings. The geopark thus offers a clear thematic focus: connecting protection and development with different foundations of knowledge. If you are interested in this connection, Kütralkura can be considered a distinctive theme among the region’s attractions.

Summer, hiking and skiing

During the summer season, kayaks and boats are available to rent in Parque Nacional Conguillío. Since this is a seasonal service, check before your trip whether rentals are available during the summer season in question.

On the Sendero Travesía Río Blanco in Parque Nacional Conguillío, the distance and time required are unusual in relation to each other: the trail is 3.74 km long, takes eight hours one way and is rated very difficult. The trail’s length alone is therefore no indication that it can be completed quickly. When planning, it is especially important to note that the stated duration applies to one direction. Trail conditions and seasonal hazards can change; check them before setting out.

There are also two specific regional options for skiing. The part of Parque Nacional Villarrica located in the Araucanía Region has ski slopes. The Reserva Nacional Malalcahuello is home to a ski center operated under concession by Corralco S.A. Check the conditions for winter activities before your trip, as operating conditions at winter facilities can change seasonally.

For planning your schedule, these details should be interpreted differently: rentals are tied to the summer season, the Sendero takes eight hours one way, and it is worth checking current conditions at the ski centers. Season, time required and operations are separate considerations that may affect your choice of travel dates.

Finding your way toward the coast

From Temuco, Ruta S-40 heads toward the coast and Lago Budi. The route is 80 km; the drive takes about an hour. The distance and driving time are estimates and may vary depending on conditions. If Lago Budi is part of your plans, this gives you a specific point of reference for planning your trip.

When choosing accommodation, you can use your planned focus as a guide: for Lago Budi, the route from Temuco gives you an approximate point of reference. For other activities, the rental season, tour duration or current skiing conditions may be relevant. This can help you plan your overnight stays around what you want to experience in the Araucanía Region.
