Landscape and Geology in Melipeuco

Cascada Chufquén is located in the municipality of Melipeuco, in the Huechelepun sector, beside the road. There, water plunges about 10 m over a lava escarpment of Sollipulli Volcano. Cañadón del río Truful Truful has a viewpoint and an information board. From there, you can see a wall about 75 m high, exposed by erosion from the Río Truful Truful. Its layers reveal the eruption history of Llaima Volcano over the past 13,000 years.

At Mirador Escorial, beside the Geositio Lava de 1751 at kilometer 4 of Camino Icalma in Melipeuco, you can see the glacial valleys of Alpehue, Tracura, and El Escorial, as well as parts of Llaima and Sollipulli volcanoes. Nearby Reserva Nacional China Muerta is part of Reserva de Biósfera Araucarias, established by UNESCO in 1983. Native araucarias (Araucaria araucana), Ciprés de la cordillera (Austrocedrus chilensis), and Lleuque (Prumnopitys andina) grow in the protected area.

Culture and Orientation

In the urban area, Museo Histórico de Melipeuco is a museum space at Parador Turístico de Melipeuco. The museum focuses on the municipality's cultural heritage. It opened to the public with permanent exhibitions on February 16, 2017. These included the exhibition “Huellas de un Pasado Maderero,” developed in collaboration with the municipality.

The Parador is designed as a point of contact for tourist information about the municipality's attractions, places, and roads. At its inauguration in 2015, it was described as having a 4D cinema, an exhibition space, an auditorium, a cafeteria, and a tourist information area. The exhibition space at the time displayed a collection of obsidian arrowheads. Some pieces were said to be about 5,000 years old; they came from finds at various locations in the municipality.
