Villa O'higgins lies at the end of the Carretera Austral and at the beginning of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, at the mouth of the RĂo Mayer and opposite Lago O'higgins. The lake is 836 m deep and is considered the deepest lake in the Americas; it was formed by the O'higgins Glacier. Visitors considering O'higgins as a destination for hiking, culture, or nature experiences will find specific tour options in Parque Glaciar Mosco. Travel from Coyhaique and excursions in the surrounding area require separate time planning.

Hiking Trails and Local History

Parque Glaciar Mosco is a protected national asset administered by the Municipality of Villa O'higgins and has a network of trekking trails. The park administration and the trail network and Ruta Patrimonial Glaciar RĂo Mosco starting points are located about 100 m east of the main square in the center. This makes the park a useful landmark for planning excursions in town.

The town's history can also be traced through a specific building: the Museo de la Patagonia Padre Antonio Ronchi is located in a Catholic church. From 1974 to the end of 1987, the church served as a community center and a collection point for supplies. The museum presents both the architecture and symbolism of the old church and the history of the community's settlement.

The Ruta Patrimonial Parque Glaciar Mosco is about 12.4 km long and fully signposted. In places, it follows an old trail used by the area's first residents in 1930. The forest along the route is, among other things, a habitat for huemul (Andean deer), culpeo foxes, and occasional pumas.

Compare Hikes by Duration and Difficulty

For a shorter hike, the easy Sendero Mirador del Valle offers an option of about 4 km and approximately two hours round trip. At around 3.4 km, Sendero La Bandera is shorter, but is rated as a moderate-to-difficult mountain hike; the round trip is estimated to take about two and a half hours. The comparison shows that trail length and time required do not automatically produce the same ranking.

The moderate Sendero Cóndores is a loop of about 5.5 km, taking approximately four hours to hike. It connects Sendero La Bandera with Sendero Mirador del Valle. For a longer hike, Sendero Río Mosco Norte is a moderate-to-difficult route of about 8 km; the estimated hiking time is approximately eight hours round trip between the park administration and the shelter. The trail is also known as “Refugio.” The difficult Sendero La Dormilona is a mid-mountain hike of about 12 km, taking approximately 14 hours round trip between the park administration and the La Dormilona viewpoint.

Trail lengths and hiking times are estimates; trail conditions and signage may change. Check current conditions before setting out. This allows you to compare the trails based on their stated duration and difficulty rating, without judging the effort by distance alone.

Lake, Kayaking, and Other Ways to Travel

Lago Cisnes is 11 km north of Villa O'higgins and is 6 km long. It offers opportunities for fishing, birdwatching, and recreational boating. On its southern shore is a main beach about 2 km long, used by locals and visitors for swimming during the summer season. This seasonal activity makes a trip to the lake different from hiking the trails in Parque Glaciar Mosco.

Kayaking activities on the lakes of the municipality are offered in Villa O'higgins in collaboration with local guides. These include trips on Lago Cisnes, outings on the RĂo Mayer, and the Three Lakes Traverse. A full-day boat expedition to the O'Higgins and Chico glaciers is also offered from Villa O'higgins. The specific options for kayaking and boat trips depend on provider availability and the weather; check these conditions before planning.

Another type of connection is the 130 km route from Villa O'higgins to Chaltén in Argentina. It combines trekking and boat travel, passes through sections of Laguna del Desierto, and cannot be completed by vehicle. The journey from Coyhaique to Villa O'higgins via the Carretera Austral is listed as approximately 575 km and about twelve hours. The route includes long gravel sections and a mandatory ferry crossing. Check the ferry schedule and current road and ferry conditions before traveling.
