Capitán Prat Province offers a variety of discoveries: protected landscapes, specific hikes and places whose history is connected to the Río Baker. Patagonia National Park extends across General Carrera and Capitán Prat provinces, as well as the municipalities of Chile Chico and Cochrane. Its attractions range from a short hike in Valle Chacabuco to historical traces at the mouth of the Baker and the wooden walkways of Caleta Tortel.

Nature in Specific Terms

The La Confluencia Trail is in the Valle Chacabuco sector of Patagonia National Park in Cochrane. The trail is three kilometers long, takes about 40 minutes in total and is considered easy. Its length, duration and difficulty provide clear guidance for the hike. Since trail information can change with management conditions, check the latest information before your visit.

The size of a protected area also helps put its scale into perspective: Katalalixar National Reserve covers 674,500 hectares and is located in Tortel, in Capitán Prat Province. It currently has neither visitor services nor public infrastructure. Check the current situation before visiting.

Bernardo O’Higgins National Park is administratively part of, among other places, the municipality of Tortel in Capitán Prat Province. The park’s landscapes include mountains, ice fields, fjords and glaciers. This vast natural setting offers a different focus from the clearly defined trails in Valle Chacabuco.

Hikes with Different Durations

Monte San Lorenzo offers routes for hikers, including the Agostini Route and the Laguna Río Tranquilo trail. A trail of about seven kilometers leads to the edge of the Calluqueo Glacier. Trail and access conditions can change; at Monte San Lorenzo, weather and season also play a role. Check conditions before your hike.

The hike up Cerro Bandera begins at the Padre Antonio Ronchi Footbridge, follows a route from the Baker Delta and takes about two hours. For planning purposes, these roughly two hours can be compared with the approximately 40 minutes for the La Confluencia Trail. For the trail in Valle Chacabuco, the easy difficulty rating complements the time estimate. This provides concrete guidance for two different hikes, clearly specific to each trail.

Historical Traces and Local Cultural Heritage

The Isla de los Muertos lies at the mouth of the Río Baker, three kilometers from Caleta Tortel. The island has 33 wooden crosses, which are believed to be the remains of a series of individual graves from 1906. This interpretation is deliberately presented as a possibility. Another historical trace is Paso San Carlos, a Historic Monument dating to 1901: it connected the lower and middle stretches of the Río Baker, bypassing El Saltón. Here, the crosses and a presumed story of graves contrast with a documented former route.

In Caleta Tortel, the streets have been replaced by wooden walkways made from Guaitecas cypress, which run throughout the town. These paths give the town a distinctive built character. The Bordadoras del Baker are also part of local cultural history: in 2025, they were added to Chile’s National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In Cochrane, the craft fair offers local handicrafts and native products. Since its opening arrangements may change, check the current visiting hours before your visit. The province thus brings together hiking experiences, historical places and encounters with local cultural heritage without reducing them to a single destination.
