Zdravets brings together a major church feast day, folklore, seasonal customs and culinary traditions. The Church of the Ascension of the Lord, the Ivan Vazov 1908 Community Cultural Center and the bus routes provide practical starting points for planning. You can first decide whether to focus your trip on architecture, festival traditions or getting there.
Church and Festival Calendar
The Church of the Ascension of the Lord in Zdravets is a three-nave domed basilica with a rounded apse. Its feast day is May 13. The village festival includes a liturgy, a charitable lamb kurban, and bread and drinks for everyone. If you would like to experience the celebrations, check the specific dates and times in advance.
Christmas and Easter are also part of the traditional calendar: at Christmas, unmarried young men sing carols, while at Easter, colored eggs and kozunak are distributed to children. These celebrations fall at different times of year and have distinct traditions—from Christmas caroling to Easter gifts. Ask about local dates if you would like to include one of these customs in your trip plans.
Folklore and Cultural Heritage
The Ivan Vazov 1908 Community Cultural Center has the authentic folklore group DFG Lazarki and the mixed children’s folk singing group North Bulgarian Authentic Songs. One group is described as an authentic folklore group, while the other is specifically a children’s folk singing group; they differ both in type and in their participants. If you plan to attend a performance, check the event dates in advance.
An accessible entrance from outside leads to the center’s ground-floor rooms. Confirm current access arrangements locally before your visit.
Zdravets is considered to have been shaped by Aegean Thracian Bulgarians, Bosilegrad Shopi, Vlach Rudar and Turks. The first Aegean Thracian settlers arrived in 1881. This cultural background adds a historical perspective on the makeup of the settlement to the insights offered by its folklore groups and festival customs.
Mamalyga and Regional Cuisine
Zdravets hosted a national Mamalyga festival. The focus was on cornmeal dishes and other foods from various ethnic communities; culinary presentations and judging were also part of the event. The festival combined traditional recipes with Bulgarian folklore and celebrated the communities’ cultural diversity. While the church festival includes a liturgy and communal hospitality, the Mamalyga festival puts food, presentations and folklore center stage.
Getting There by Bus
Two municipal bus routes go to or pass through Zdravets. The Targovishte–Zdravets route starts at the bus station in Targovishte and goes via the Vabel neighborhood to Zdravets. The Targovishte–Popovo route also passes through the village. The first route includes the bus station and Vabel in its itinerary; the second connects Targovishte and Popovo, passing through Zdravets along the way. Check operating days and departure times before traveling.
