Archaeological finds, historic houses and theatre offer different perspectives on Targovishte. Travellers looking for a destination with cultural and historical themes can get to know the city through its exhibitions, buildings and stages.

Archaeology and everyday history

The Archaeological Exhibition is housed in the former Hadzhi Rusi School, a building erected in 1907. Its content spans the period from prehistory to the Middle Ages and explores the history of the Targovishte region. Exhibits include a Chalcolithic cult scene, collections of idols, a Thracian gold treasure, a silver surgical instrument and epigraphic monuments. The selection thus brings together very different types of finds: cult objects, precious items, an instrument and inscriptions.

The Ethnographic Exhibition offers a different perspective. It is devoted to the culture and everyday life of the population of the Targovishte region. Taken together, the exhibitions present long periods of archaeological history alongside a subject that puts the everyday life and culture of the population at its centre. This distinction can help you decide which kind of cultural history interests you most.

Historic houses and exhibitions

The Sveshtarova House was built in 1860. It houses the permanent exhibition “With the Flame of Faith” about icons and church vessels, which has been on display since 2014. The house and exhibition thus bring together a specific construction date and a clearly defined theme of religious art.

The Nikola Simov Kuruto House Museum features an exhibition about the life and work of the standard-bearer in Botev’s company. Those interested in this figure will find a biographical focus here, distinct from the archaeological themes and ethnographic presentation.

The Slaveykov School is also a historical landmark in its own right: it has been a national cultural monument since 1971. It also hosts temporary exhibitions by the Targovishte Regional Historical Museum. Unlike the permanent exhibition at Sveshtarova House, these presentations change; the monument and its role as an exhibition venue come together here.

Theatre as another cultural highlight

The theatres add another cultural dimension to Targovishte. The Targovishte State Puppet Theatre was recognised as a state puppet theatre on 1 October 1975. Its productions have been staged at more than 100 venues in Bulgaria and abroad. Targovishte Drama Theatre has a large auditorium and a chamber auditorium, and hosts the International Festival of Children's Performances “Magic Curtain” as well as the “Days of the Big Theatre in the Small Town”.

The two venues differ both in the form of theatre they offer and in the events mentioned: one is the puppet theatre, with its performance history; the other is the drama theatre, with two differently sized auditoriums and the two festivals. These are useful points to consider when choosing a theme, without having to limit yourself to just one kind of cultural offering.

Getting your bearings in the city and region

The Targovishte Tourist Information Centre provides information about tourist attractions. The nearby Misionis Fortress is cited as a point of interest in the tourist guide: it lies 7 kilometres southwest of Targovishte and 1.6 kilometres from the Sofia–Varna I-4 road. The fortress supports long-term scientific and educational programmes run by the Targovishte Regional Historical Museum.

The city also features in the wider region's thematic tourism: Targovishte is part of Bulgaria's wine and culinary destination network. It is also close to the cultural and historical destination “Old Capitals and Cities of the Bulgarian Kings and Patriarchs”. These connections complement the local cultural themes with culinary and cultural-historical contexts.
