Poço Verde combines a historical landmark near the town center with the community’s cultural traditions. Weaving and religious festivals are especially prominent: the craft’s techniques and patterns offer a glimpse into a long history, while festivals are tied to specific places and dates. This is a useful distinction when planning your trip. First decide whether you want to focus on the cultural background or on a particular festival.

Weaving: Technique and Identity

The municipality’s weaving tradition goes back generations. It has been shaped by Indigenous traditions and European influences; different types of looms and patterns used for hammocks, blankets, and rugs are among its visible expressions. This means the tradition cannot be reduced to a single product: techniques and patterns reveal different aspects of the same craft heritage.

In the povoado of Malhadinha, in the municipality of Poço Verde, weaving is a family tradition. In the 1960s, Maria de Filhinha de Jesus, known as “Dona Fiinha,” introduced pedal-loom weaving to the municipality. Tecelagem da Malhadinha is also located in the municipality. Artisan Rosilene Fernandes described the craft of Tecelagem as carrying the history and identity of local people.

The Associação Musical Filarmônica Lira Santa Cruz is also part of the area’s cultural history. It was founded on May 25, 2000, and was declared an intangible cultural heritage of Sergipe under Law No. 8.938 of December 14, 2021. In the municipality, the association offered free music lessons to young people and adults.

Religious Traditions and Festival Dates

The processions also have their own distinctive character. A 2018 account describes the Santa Cruz procession in the municipality of Poço Verde as an annual event attended by thousands of worshippers. The Festa da Santa Cruz da Serra Grande takes place on May 3 in the povoado of Saco do Camisa, also known as Ventoso. During this festival, dozens of devotees climb toward the chapel on Serra Grande; some make the climb barefoot.

Reisado has become a tradition in the municipality of Poço Verde during the June festivities. A 2024 UFS dissertation identified São Sebastião Day, on January 20, as the municipality’s most important festival event and described thousands of people taking part in a procession through the streets. January, May 3, and the June festivities offer different seasonal points of reference. If you are traveling for a particular festival, check the date locally for your travel year.

Historical Landmark and Landscape

Cemitério Santa Cruz was established in 1847 and is located near the center of Poço Verde. It is a historical landmark in the town center with a specific date. The municipality of Poço Verde lies in the semiarid region of Sergipe and in the Polígono das Secas; its vegetation belongs to the Caatinga biome. The area’s natural environment complements the historical landmark near the center and adds to the cultural themes of a stay.

When to Travel and How to Find Accommodation

When searching for a holiday rental, you can start by choosing your travel dates and deciding what you want to focus on. A festival-focused stay depends on a confirmed date; the weaving tradition, by contrast, offers a cultural and historical focus that is not tied to any one of the festival dates mentioned. Your choice of travel dates therefore depends on whether you want to focus on a specific event or on the area’s cultural history.
