In Cânion do Xingó, reddish cliffs more than 50 meters high frame the emerald-green water. A trip through the canyon lets you experience this landscape from the water; excursions usually include a stop at Paraíso do Talhado, where you can swim and take in the scenery. Sergipe combines experiences like these with hiking trails, protected areas, and cultural discoveries.

Protected Areas and Trails

The Monumento Natural do Rio São Francisco protects around 26,000 hectares along the riverbed and its banks. The area includes, among other places, Canindé de São Francisco in Sergipe. Its protected habitats include the Caatinga as well as aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems; the area is also home to archaeological sites with rock paintings. Here, nature conservation and archaeological heritage come together within the same protected area.

The Parque Nacional Serra de Itabaiana is defined by a different landscape: it lies in the Mata Atlântica biome and covers 8,024.79 hectares. Experiences available there include ecotourism, hikes, and swimming at waterfalls. Its six trails are named Via Sacra, dos Carros, do Caldeirão, do Paredão, do Paredão dos Falcões, and do Paredão Vertical. Gruta da Serra is also part of the park. The combination of trails and waterfalls appeals to travelers who want not only to admire nature but also explore it on foot.

In Itabaiana, Parque dos Falcões is dedicated to the breeding, propagation, and protection of birds of prey. More than 400 birds are cared for there, including buzzards, falcons, and owls. Its focus is the protection of specific groups of animals, while the two national and natural monuments primarily preserve different landscapes and ecosystems.

Experience the River and Coast

On Ilha Mem de Sá, on the Rio Vaza Barris, options include taking a boat to get there, swimming in the river, and experiencing the natural landscape. On Sergipe's southern coast, the mangroves of the Indiaroba estuary offer a different focus: boat trips, wildlife watching, and regional cuisine. These water-based experiences vary considerably—from a canyon trip with a usual swimming stop to river scenery, mangroves, and regional food.

The Orla de Atalaia in Aracaju also offers space for exercise: parks and sports facilities line the six-kilometer-long beach promenade. As these facilities may change, check their current status before your visit.

Cultural Heritage and Museums

Praça São Francisco in São Cristóvão has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2010. Another cultural tradition is the Barco de Fogo: this handcrafted historical and cultural heritage item is traditionally associated with the June festival, is made exclusively in Estância, and is recognized as heritage of the people of Sergipe under State Law No. 7,690.

The Museu da Gente Sergipana uses high technology and interactivity to present Sergipe's history, cuisine, festivals, customs, and oral culture through sensory experiences. The collection at the Museu Histórico de Sergipe ranges from 19th- and 20th-century furniture to works of art, busts of prominent people from Sergipe, coins, medals, porcelain, and old telephones, as well as rare objects and photographs of people from the Cangaço. Together, the museums offer different ways to explore: interactive experiences of everyday life and culture at one, and a diverse collection of historical objects at the other.
