Grota de Angicos, where Virgulino Ferreira da Silva, known as Lampião, was killed, gives Poço Redondo a strong connection to the history of Cangaço. The area also features a border landscape, places along the Rio São Francisco and local cultural traditions. When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide whether historical sites, landscapes or local culture will shape your stay.

Landscapes between Serra Negra and the Rio São Francisco

Serra Negra reaches an elevation of more than 742 metres on the border between Poço Redondo and Bahia. Cachoeira de Bom Jardim offers a different landscape: the waterfall has a lake formed between quartz walls along the course of the Rio Jacaré. Water conditions can vary seasonally; take this into account when planning a visit to Cachoeira. There are rock paintings near the settlement of Monte Alegre Velho in Poço Redondo.

Located on the Rio São Francisco, Bonsucesso has a small island with a prayer chapel. There is also an old cemetery on the island. From its highest point, you can see an old sunken boat of the Chata type. These distinctive features give the river landscape its own historical and cultural significance.

Cangaço heritage and historic buildings

Praça Lampião is visited by tourists and is a meeting place for attendees of the Missa do Cangaço. It also commemorates the start of the Semana do Cangaço festivities. In Curralinho, Igreja de Santo Antônio was built at the end of the 19th century. Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição was the town’s first religious building; according to tradition, it was built in 1874. The church and chapel therefore represent two distinct historical points of reference in Curralinho.

Festivals and local traditions

Festa de Santo Antônio is part of local tradition and is associated with the period from 1 to 13 June at Igreja de Santo Antônio and its surroundings. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the festival calendar for the relevant year. Festa de São Sebastião in Bonsucesso is said to have been celebrated annually for more than 100 years; it begins approximately two weeks before 20 January. The two festivals offer different seasonal points of reference. Check the exact dates for your travel year if you want a festival to determine when you travel.

The Serra da Guia Quilombo community holds its main festivals at Alto da Serra in honour of Santa Cruz and Nossa Senhora da Imaculada Conceição. The festival traditions in Bonsucesso and at Alto da Serra each have their own religious associations.

Bobbin lace and Coroa-de-Frade sweets

As Filhas da Renda is a group from Poço Redondo that makes bobbin lace. Its work includes tablecloths, table centrepieces, blouses, dresses and accessories such as bags, earrings and necklaces. The five lacemakers meet weekly to make lace together, exchange experiences and discuss the group’s activities. Making sweets from Coroa-de-Frade is also an established cultural practice in Poço Redondo and is important to the local community.

When looking for a holiday rental, you can focus on the kind of experience you want: historic heritage sites, religious buildings, landscapes or local culture each lead to different planning considerations.
