Areia Branca combines a venue dedicated exclusively to Forró with a Saturday market, a centrally located church, and festive traditions surrounding São João. These themes reveal different sides of the city: Forró represents a clear musical dedication, the Feira brings together food and vendors from neighboring towns, and the Igreja São João Batista has religious and historical connections. Those wishing to plan their trip around local culture will find several different starting points here.

Forró and Local History

The Forródromo de Areia Branca is dedicated exclusively to Forró. It was established in 1992 and has a 54,000-square-meter dance floor. With its explicit dedication and specific details about its founding year and size, it is a notable landmark for anyone interested in Forró culture.

São João Batista is also connected to the town’s religious history: he is the patron saint of Areia Branca. The Igreja São João Batista is located at Praça Juviniano Freire in the city center. The settlement grew up around a chapel, which later became the Igreja Matriz São João Batista. Juviniano Freire de Oliveira and Virgílio Rodrigues do Nascimento are named as its founders. This makes it possible to consider the settlement’s development, the later church, and the city’s religious identity together.

Feira and Food

The Feira de Areia Branca offers a diverse selection of food. Vendors from neighboring towns also come to sell their products there. The market therefore combines a wide range of food with vendors from the surrounding area. A 2017 municipal tourism description lists Saturday as market day; check the date before your visit.

São João and Processions

In 2022, the Legislative Assembly of Sergipe (Alese) approved Bill No. 12/2022, designating São João de Areia Branca as cultural and intangible heritage of Sergipe. A municipal report from July 2022 describes a traditional Cavalgada that passed through Areia Branca’s main streets and ended at the Forródromo square. Dominguinhos gave the square the nickname “Maracanã do Forró.”

A report from May 2026 describes the revival of the Batalhão de São João, a traditional procession through the streets during the São João celebrations. Another report, dated February 12, 2026, describes an edition of Bloquinho da Assistência Social: it began at Praça Joviniano Freire de Oliveira and then proceeded through the streets of Areia Branca. The Cavalgada is stated to end at the Forródromo, while the Bloquinho is stated to start at the Praça. If you wish to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates for your intended travel period.

The Municipality’s Natural Setting

The Parque Nacional Serra de Itabaiana, located in the municipality of Areia Branca, is one of the area’s natural attractions. The park protects landscapes of the Mata Atlântica and Caatinga. A 2017 municipal visitor description mentions twelve trails with waterfalls, pools, streams, and rocky cliffs. This gives the municipality a scenic dimension alongside its cultural and historical attractions. If you would like to include the national park in your plans, check visitor conditions in advance.
