Aracaju can be discovered in many different ways: historic buildings and city markets shape the character of the historic center, while coastal and sports activities take center stage along the Orla de Atalaia. There are also scientific and maritime attractions, as well as boat trips through the mangroves of the Rio Vaza Barris. Depending on whether you are interested in history, regional products or outdoor activities, these places each offer a distinct experience.

History, Architecture and Crafts

The Palácio e Museu Olímpio Campos is housed in the former seat of the state government. Its stately rooms include meeting and banquet halls, furniture, objects and artworks, as well as the governors’ private quarters. The Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Conceição in the historic center was built in 1875; its paintings refer to the founding of Aracaju. Both places offer different perspectives on the city: the former government seat, with its rooms and objects, and the cathedral, with its architectural history and painted references to the city’s founding.

Crafts and regional products are also part of the city’s character. The Centro de Turismo has handicraft shops and the Museu do Artesanato Sergipano. The city markets in the center bring together architecture and local history with the aromas, colors and flavors of regional foods and products. Visitors interested in crafts will find a dedicated place to explore them at the Centro de Turismo; the markets, meanwhile, highlight regional produce and the history of their urban surroundings.

Coastline and Routes Along the Orla

The Orla de Atalaia offers parks and sports facilities along a six-kilometer stretch of coast. For cyclists and runners, the protected area includes a seven-kilometer round trip between the Passarela do Caranguejo and the Coroa do Meio lighthouse. Aracaju has a total of 35 kilometers of beaches. These figures describe different scales: the city’s total beach length, a stretch of coast along the Orla and a specific round-trip route for sports activities. They should therefore not be read as interchangeable measurements of a single route. For the seven-kilometer route, it is a good idea to check the current route and usage guidance before setting out.

Science, the Sea and Mangroves

The Casa de CiĂŞncia e Tecnologia (CCTECA) Galileu Galilei is located in Parque Governador Augusto Franco, also known as Sementeira. A city description dated April 5, 2024, describes public observations using telescopes and other equipment. It also notes that the facility had been giving residents of Aracaju and tourists access to scientific materials, lectures, and educational and entertainment projects for 15 years. If you plan to visit indoor spaces, please check access arrangements in advance.

At the Oceanário de Sergipe on the Orla de Atalaia, a visit offers insight into the protection of marine animals and species from the waters of the Rio São Francisco. Boat trips through the mangroves of the Rio Vaza Barris offer a different perspective on the landscape. The experiences have different focuses: the Oceanário centers on animals and conservation, while the boat trips travel through the mangroves.

ForrĂł Caju in June

An official tourism description from 2018 portrays ForrĂł Caju as a June festival that drew visitors from all over Brazil to Aracaju. It reports that the evenings described attracted around 100,000 people each. Visitors came together to eat, drink, dance Quadrilhas Juninas and enjoy performances by regional and national artists. If the festival is important to your trip, check the current dates and program.

This lets you choose destinations within the city to suit your interests, without combining the different activities into a single outing.
