Bananal brings together the heritage of the coffee cycle and natural attractions within the municipality for trip planning. A historic mansion and a pharmacy that has operated at the same location since 1830 shape the picture of the town’s history; a protected area, forest trails and waterfalls add to it. First decide which stops will define your stay, then compare their locations with the accommodation you are considering.

The Coffee Cycle and Local History

Solar Aguiar Valim, also known as Sobrado Vallim, is a historic mansion from the coffee cycle. It was built in 1855 by Comendador Manoel de Aguiar Vallim in Bananal, in the state of São Paulo. Pharmácia Popular is located in Bananal’s historic center. It is considered Brazil’s oldest pharmacy and has operated at the same location since 1830.

The two sites represent different historical themes: the mansion is associated with the coffee cycle, while the pharmacy represents a use that has continued at the same location since 1830. Visitors interested in local history can therefore find both a mansion with a specific construction date and a pharmacy with a long history of operation.

Historic Fazendas in the Municipality

Several fazendas with different historical connections are also located within the municipality of Bananal. Fazenda TrĂŞs Barras dates from the late 18th century. It hosted the Prince Regent Dom Pedro and President Juscelino Kubitschek. The furnishings from that period have been preserved in the room occupied by JK.

Fazenda Resgate is a listed fazenda from the 19th century, preserved in excellent condition. Fazenda dos Coqueiros dates from 1855; its architectural structure and furnishings have been preserved. Fazenda Loanda is located near the center of Bananal and is in very good condition. The sites thus differ not only in age but also in their preserved historical associations: from the figures connected with TrĂŞs Barras to the preserved furnishings at Coqueiros.

Protected Area, Historic Trails and Waterfalls

Established in 1987, Estação Ecológica Bananal covers 884 hectares and helps protect one of the last remaining areas of Atlantic Rainforest in the state of São Paulo. The station contains a preserved 800-meter section of the historic Trilha do Ouro. The trail, which is more than 300 years old, was built by enslaved workers and paved entirely with stones. It is used for environmental education activities. Here, a clearly defined section of trail meets a history also shaped by the labor of enslaved people.

Within the municipality, Trilha da Cachoeira Sete Quedas provides access to the waterfall’s last two cascades. Swimming is allowed there without sunscreen. Visitor rules may change, so check the current requirements before your visit. At Cachoeira do Bracuí, a trail through preserved Atlantic Rainforest leads to the waterfall. It consists of five cascades with a total drop of 1,100 meters.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

A route from the capital first follows BR-116, also known as Rodovia Presidente Dutra, then SP-244/068, also known as Rodovia Deputado Nesralla Rubez, and finally SP-068, also known as Rodovia dos Tropeiros. Check road signs and road conditions before setting out, as both may change.

When choosing accommodation, compare its location with the destinations you plan to visit: Pharmácia Popular is in the historic center, and Fazenda Loanda is near the center; other fazendas and natural attractions are located throughout the municipality. This lets you tailor your stay to your main interest, whether that is local history, the fazendas or natural attractions.
