Várzea can be viewed from several specific perspectives: Serra da Formosa and the Moicó River shape the landscape, while Sítio Várzea and the processing of the carnauba palm offer historical and cultural points of reference. There are also events in different formats and a cycling event with a designated 33-kilometre route. This gives you a choice when planning your trip: landscape, local history or local traditions—each offering a distinct view of Várzea.
Landscape Around Várzea
Serra da Formosa, also known as Espelho, is one of the two main mountain ranges in Várzea. The Moicó River runs through the municipality. Open fields, Caatinga and forest areas are also part of the landscape. A named mountain range and a river thus sit alongside three distinct types of landscape. This distinction offers a practical point of reference: Serra da Formosa and the Moicó are geographic landmarks, while the fields, Caatinga and forest areas complete the landscape.
Local History and Carnauba Craftsmanship
The local history leads to Sítio Várzea. Around 1853, this place was the starting point of the settlement from which the municipality of Várzea later emerged. Another cultural reference is the carnauba palm: in Várzea, it is used to make brooms, hats, baskets and mats. These different items show how the palm is processed into a range of products. Together with the history of Sítio Várzea, this tradition adds a cultural dimension to Várzea that goes beyond its landscape.
Events and Cultural Traditions
The 2025 edition of João Pedro de Várzea concluded 41 years of tradition. The programme included authentic forró, performances by Junina dance groups and culinary demonstrations. Music, dance and culinary presentations were all part of the programme. The municipality's cultural calendar also listed Carnaval Várzea Folia for 2026.
The XIV Cavalgada do Sertão was another kind of gathering. It brought together hundreds of riders and female riders in Várzea to celebrate Sertanejo culture and tradition. The examples have different emphases: João Pedro featured forró, dance and culinary demonstrations, while the Cavalgada put the riders and Sertanejo tradition at the centre. These named cultural events can therefore be distinguished by their respective themes.
Pitombeira and a Cycling Event
Pitombeira is a quilombo community made up of descendants of former quilombo residents. It lies within the municipality of Várzea, in western Seridó in Paraíba, along the southeastern boundary with the municipality of Santa Luzia, beside state highway PB-233, the Anísio Marinho State Highway. This location links a named community to a specific boundary and road.
At the Ecopedal do Centenário, a 33-kilometre cycling route led to Parque do Juazeiro. This offers a different way to explore the area from its cultural events: here, a specific route length and a named destination define the cycling event. Taken together, the examples show that Várzea can be described through its landscape and history as well as its cultural gatherings and a specific cycling format. Depending on which of these aspects matters most to you, each offers a distinct starting point for exploring the destination.
