Taperoá can be explored through several distinct themes: the literature of Ariano Suassuna, historic buildings, archaeological rock art and landforms within the municipality. In the town, the writer’s story and the architecture of the historic center come together; the rock art and landscape broaden the view of the municipality. This lets you choose your focus based on your interests, rather than defining Taperoá by just one landmark.
Ariano Suassuna and Historic Buildings
The Casa Museu Ariano Suassuna is located in the house where the author of “O Auto da Compadecida” and other works lived. It houses an extensive collection about his life and legacy. Historic streets shape the look of the Centro Histórico de Taperoá; their architecture reflects Ariano Suassuna’s influence. This gives the literary connection a physical dimension: it can be found both in the museum dedicated to the author and in the streets of the historic center.
Individual buildings also tell different stories. Construction of the Igreja de São Sebastião began in 1865, starting from an existing earthen chapel; the church was completed in 1894. The Ponte dos Arcos, also known as Ponte Velha, was built in 1925 and 1926. It is 64 meters long and has four arches: two large and two small. At the church, you can consider its beginnings, predecessor building and completion; at the bridge, its construction period, length and arch design.
Cultural Route and Local Connections
Launched on November 18, 2024, the cultural and historical route “Caminhos de Ariano” took visitors through Taperoá to key historic attractions. The program at its launch also included a visit to the cheese dairy at Fazenda Carnaúba and the Ilumiara Jaúna rocks, which bear carved drawings. The program at the time thus brought together historic attractions, a cheese dairy and a rock-art site.
Another historical and cultural connection is the group Os Cariris, which made its first appearance at the city’s street São João festival. If you would like to include a particular stop in your plans, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
Rock Art in the Surrounding Area
Two archaeological sites near Taperoá offer different examples of rock art. Sítio Arqueológico Lagoa do Escuro is 10 kilometers from the municipal seat. Engravings and paintings are found on a granite formation. Sítio Arqueológico Pau Leite is 12 kilometers from the urban area; it features a group of rock drawings and two other locations with paintings.
The distances use different reference points: for Lagoa do Escuro, it is the municipal seat; for Pau Leite, it is the urban area. The descriptions also differ: Lagoa do Escuro is described as having engravings and paintings on a granite formation, while Pau Leite is described as having a group of drawings and additional locations with paintings. This makes it clear when planning what specific rock art to expect at each site.
Landscape in the Municipality
The Serra do Pico shapes the landscape as seen from the municipal seat of Taperoá. It rises to more than 900 meters and is considered the second-highest point in the state of Paraíba. Pedra Furada, a large pyramidal granite formation, is also located within the municipality. Its concave hollow was formed by natural chemical and physical processes, creating a granitic space.
The two landscape features offer different perspectives: the Serra do Pico represents the landscape’s elevation, while Pedra Furada is a specific geological formation. Together with the historic buildings and archaeological sites, they allow Taperoá to be viewed from several angles.
