A religious route in town, a long-standing festival tradition, and railway viaducts in the Município of Salgadinho offer different perspectives on the destination. If you are looking for accommodation in Salgadinho, you can first decide whether faith history, Paraíba tourmaline, or railway heritage should be the focus of your trip.

Places of Faith and Local Traditions

In Salgadinho, the route shaped by religious acts of faith leads from the Cruzeiro de São Sebastião to the Mirante de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. The two named points give the route a clear course; its character is religious. The focus is therefore on connecting specific places with acts of faith, rather than on a mere collection of viewpoints.

The festival in honor of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is also part of the religious tradition of the Município of Salgadinho. It is celebrated on July 16 and is regarded as the oldest festival in the Município; records date back to the 1920s. The date and the long tradition give this festival two clear historical reference points. In this way, two different perspectives complement one another: the religious route in town and the festival at the Município level.

According to local tradition, the name Salgadinho comes from wells whose water tasted distinctly salty. This history of the name links it to a specific quality of the water. It adds another perspective on local history alongside the religious traditions: not through a festival or a route, but through the traditional explanation of a place name.

Paraíba Tourmaline and Railway History

The history of Paraíba tourmaline is also connected to the Município of Salgadinho. At the Mina da Batalha in the Distrito of São José da Batalha, the first crystals of the variety known as “Paraíba tourmaline” were found in 1988, after seven years of mining. The crystals are described as having shades of blue and green considered unparalleled among tourmalines. The location, duration of mining, and year give this story a specific timeframe and geographical setting.

Two railway viaducts offer another perspective on the Município’s heritage. The Viaduto da Serra da Viração is 190 meters long and 44 meters high. It is located at railway kilometer 129 and was inaugurated on September 15, 1957, by the RFN (Rede Ferroviária do Nordeste) on the railway line between Campina Grande and Patos. The measurements, kilometer marker, and inauguration date describe different aspects of the same structure: its size, its location on the railway, and its place in railway history.

The Viaduto dos Oitis is considerably smaller, measuring 45 meters long and about 25 meters high. It is located in the Município of Salgadinho between the former Salgadinho and Areia de Baraúna railway stations, at railway kilometer 135.47. Two large central pillars support the structure. Comparing it with the Viaduto da Serra da Viração makes the different dimensions of the two structures tangible; the Viaduto dos Oitis also stands out for its striking support structure.

A Tourism Program from 2024

A tourism program documented for 2024 in the Município of Salgadinho brought together food, crafts, and a range of stops. It began at the Casa de Farinha in Sítio Olho D’água with a June breakfast, a Farinhada, and live music. The program also included a visit to the tunnel at Barragem Velha and a workshop on the Fuxico technique at the Casa do Artesanato. The route passed by the Ponte Férrea, where a rappelling demonstration took place. The program ended at the Mirante da Santa Rezadeira.

The stops show how varied the themes of a stay can be: the Casa de Farinha brings culinary and craft traditions into the picture, the workshop introduces the Fuxico technique, and the tunnel, bridge, and viewpoint offer other highlights. If you use these program items to plan a visit, check in advance whether they are currently being offered.

The dates also help distinguish the themes: records of the festival date back to the 1920s, the Viaduto da Serra da Viração was inaugurated in 1957, and the first crystals of the Paraíba tourmaline variety were found in 1988. By contrast, the tourism program offers a snapshot of 2024. Together, these different periods provide an introduction to religious traditions, railway history, gemstones, and cultural activities in the Município of Salgadinho.
