Pilões is shaped by deep, narrow valleys and mountains. Rivers that flow year-round, waterfalls and smaller streams in the Rio Mamanguape catchment area shape the landscape. There are also places to enjoy nature, explore local production and experience cultural heritage. When planning a stay, you can therefore choose from a range of themes: waterfalls and outdoor activities, visits by appointment, or architecture and cultural events.

Waterfalls, landscapes and activities

The Cachoeira de Ouricuri visitor area is managed by the Associação Amigos da Cachoeira do Ouricuri. The association charges fees to maintain the site. Camping at Cachoeira de Ouricuri requires an appointment in advance. Cachoeira da Manga is near the Cooperativa de Floricultores and about 12 kilometres from the centre of Pilões; check local access conditions before your visit.

Pedra do Espinho offers a different kind of nature experience: the approximately 200-metre-high rock is used for abseiling. Hiking trails were also included in the outdoor activities programme for the 2026 Rota Cultural Caminhos do Frio in Pilões. The nature theme thus includes both a specific abseiling site and a documented hiking programme, although the two activities do not have the same requirements.

Flowers, cassava and local offerings

The Cooperativa de Floricultores do Estado da Paraíba welcomes visitors by prior appointment; support from local guides is recommended for getting there. Its production amounts to approximately 200 to 400 bunches of flowers per week, although the quantity may vary. Alongside the landscape, flower production is another local highlight.

The Memorial Casa de Farinha has been in operation since 2012 and shows how cassava is processed, from cultivation and harvesting to flour production. Visitors can make flour together with the team by prior appointment. The visit is followed by a coffee break and song performances. Here, processing is not just about a product but part of the visit: the steps from field to flour are combined with a hands-on experience.

For arts, crafts and gastronomy, there is Terça Cultural, a weekly Tuesday market in Praça João Pessoa in Pilões. If you plan to visit on a particular market day, check the date in advance. Vila Pau D’Arco is described as the first gastronomic village in the rural Brejo Paraibano. It includes businesses offering food and drink, as well as sunsets accompanied by music.

Architecture, history and culture

In the centre of Pilões stands the century-old neoclassical Paróquia Sagrado Coração de Jesus. The Passion of Christ was performed on its steps by Teatro Padre Matheus, with more than 80 amateur actors and around 100 extras. A report dated 11 April 2022 describes this production. Other historical landmarks include Engenho Boa-Fé, a testament to Pilões’ rural-aristocratic era, and Engenho Várzea do Coaty, built in 1920.

Cultural events also showcase a variety of forms of expression. As part of the 23rd Semana Nacional de Museus in 2025, the Museu de Arqueologia de Pilões offered talks, workshops and discussion sessions for the public. The programme for the 5th Festival de Cordel in Pilões in 2025 included Cordel presentations, flute groups, melodica performances and Coco de roda. A report published on 30 July 2026 about the sixth edition of the Festival de Cordel de Pilões mentions presentations of students’ work and awards for students who wrote and performed Cordels.

Plan your visits to suit your trip

When planning, it is worth distinguishing experiences that require an appointment from the landscape and cultural attractions described here. Visits to the flower cooperative and the Memorial Casa de Farinha require an appointment in advance; camping at Cachoeira de Ouricuri does too. The market and festival reports relate to specific days of the week or editions. Fit these dates around your trip and confirm arrangements before your visit.
