Piancó, History, and Landscape
Conceição is located in the Alto Sertão Paraibano, a semiarid region with a hot climate and Caatinga vegetation. The Piancó River and its headwaters appear in two different contexts in the municipality’s history. At the beginning of the 19th century, the settlement developed on the banks of the Piancó around houses and the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. Nossa Senhora da Conceição is considered the patron saint of the municipality. By contrast, the historic site where the municipal seat was established was at the river’s headwaters. The riverbank and the headwaters are therefore two distinct geographical reference points in the history of Conceição’s origins.
Rock Paintings near Pedra do Letreiro
Pedra do Letreiro is located in the community of Cachoeirinha dos Poncianos in the municipality of Conceição and is part of an archaeological site featuring rock paintings. A preliminary archaeological record, published in 2024 and updated in 2025, identified 18 paintings. They are located both inside and on the exterior of the rock shelter, and measure 10 to 15 centimeters. The rock art offers a different focus from the town’s history: here, the number, scale, and location of the paintings take center stage.
Events with Specific Dates
In 2022, Conceição held a monthly handicraft fair. The Quadrilha festival involved the municipality’s schools, while the Corrida de Jegues was part of Semana da Cidade. Conceição Moto Fest was also held in 2022. At the arrival of Santa Claus, children were given popcorn, candy, and gifts.
ExpoCon, held from August 26 to 30, 2026, welcomed more than 10,000 visitors. It was an exhibition for agriculture, culture, and entrepreneurship. A course on fine cheeses and cheese products was also offered as part of ExpoCon.
For São João 2026, Centro Cultural Elba Ramalho was scheduled as the venue. During the festivities from June 24 to 26, vehicle traffic and parking were prohibited from 6 p.m. at Praça da Matriz and in the adjacent event areas; emergency vehicles were exempt. Getting There
In September 2026, state highway PB-386 was paved along the 13.6-kilometer stretch between Ibiara and Conceição, as well as the 17.1 kilometers between Conceição and the border between Paraíba and Ceará. Road conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
