Terra Nova combines a strong samba tradition with historical connections both in the town center and in the Rio Fundo district. Festival dates can also help with travel planning: the São Roque patron saint festival takes place on a fixed date in August, while the June festivals are tied to the season. When planning a visit, it is worth distinguishing between attractions in town and historical sites within the municipality.

Samba and Cultural Expressions

A municipal cultural survey from 2021, reproduced in the 2024 cultural plan, describes Samba de Roda as particularly influential in Terra Nova. The group Samba de Roda Filhos da Terra was founded in 2004 and registered with ASSEBA. Samba de Roda is thus connected to the town both as an important cultural expression and through a group known by name.

The development of Casa do Samba is also part of this cultural context: after its establishment in the municipality, a children’s Samba de Roda group was formed. Casa do Samba Mestre Celino was inaugurated in Terra Nova as a cultural space for samba. São João is also among the cultural expressions documented in Terra Nova. Together, these connections show different facets of cultural life: a named group, a cultural space and traditions that extend beyond individual festival dates.

Festivals with Different Dates

The festival of the patron saint São Roque takes place every year on August 16. The program includes a novena, a Mass and a procession. If you plan your trip around this occasion, check the date and program details locally in advance.

During the June festivals, the Caipiras block parades through Terra Nova. According to a 2026 municipal publication, Arraiá da Nossa Terra is one of the most important events on the cultural calendar. The dates differ: São Roque has a fixed date in August, while the June festivals take place in June; check the event dates for your travel year separately for Arraiá. This way, you can plan your visit around either a clearly dated patron saint festival or the seasonal festivities.

Local History and Central Landmarks

The original settlement of Terra Nova was founded on Fazenda Terra Nova. Its later development is linked to a sugar mill: construction began in 1889, and the mill opened in 1902. This chronology connects the founding site with a later phase of the town’s development.

In the center of Terra Nova, Igreja Matriz São Roque stands on Praça São Roque. This makes it easy to distinguish the church geographically from the historical sites in the Rio Fundo district. Those interested in local history can therefore find both a central landmark and other historical traces within the municipality.

Historical Connections in Rio Fundo and the Municipality

In the Rio Fundo district, which belongs to the municipality of Terra Nova, stands the church of São Pedro de Rio Fundo. It was Terra Nova’s first main church and is considered the town’s oldest church. Its founding on April 11, 1718, is attributed to Dom Sebastião Monteiro da Vide, the fifth Archbishop of Bahia. Its location in the district is distinct from that of Igreja Matriz São Roque in the center of Terra Nova.

Also in the Rio Fundo district is Engenho Santo Antônio do Rio Fundo. Today, only the manor house and chapel remain of the estate; both are in poor condition. At the municipal level, Quilombo Fazenda Retiro is another notable cultural site: the Fundação Cultural Palmares has certified it as a surviving quilombo community.

Another landmark in the municipality is Areal I on Fazenda Aramaré, by the Rio Pojuca. It is described as a recreational area; a local report from 2025 calls it one of the municipality’s most visited tourist destinations. Recreational and cultural attractions thus complement the historical sites that shape Terra Nova and the Rio Fundo district.
