Waterfalls in the municipality, a waterfront promenade and historic buildings give Taperoá several different sides. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between outings to the water, exploring the historic centre and the special dates associated with local traditions. This lets you plan your days around the places and themes that interest you.
Waterfalls and bathing spots in the municipality
Cachoeira de Paripe plunges 10 metres and forms a natural pool amid an extensive green area. A 700-metre path along the Rio Camurugi leads there from the BA-001. At Cachoeira Mariana, natural pools invite you to swim. Cachoeira de Araruna is 2 kilometres from the town centre. After the Noé Bridge, an unpaved road leads there; small waterfalls and natural pools also offer places to swim.
These destinations come with different details to help you plan: the length of the path is specified for Paripe, while the distance from the town centre and the unpaved access road are noted for Araruna. Balneário Paraíso das Ilhas is in the Camurugi district and offers swimming in the Rio Camurugi. When planning your day, consider which places you would like to combine rather than assuming that the different distances and route details form a single itinerary.
Historic centre and waterside paths
Taperoá’s historic centre can be explored on foot. At Praça da Bandeira, colonial houses and mansions stand beside the Igreja de São Brás and the former Prefeitura. The church was built in 1620 on the site of the former Jesuit chapel of São Miguel. It stands at the highest point in town and can be reached from the square via a long staircase with 165 steps.
The church’s furnishings include images of São Brás, São Joaquim and Senhora Santana, as well as liturgical objects made of white and gilded silver. Two bells date from 1861 and 1891. The history of the former Prefeitura, which served as the Casa de Câmara e Cadeia, also spans several phases of construction: the building was first erected as a residence at the end of the 18th century; in the 19th century, it was converted into a council and prison building.
A tourism article from 2025 describes walking and skating paths, a cycle path and a children’s playground along the waterfront promenade. The townscape therefore offers different options side by side: historic buildings and squares in the centre, as well as paths along the water. When looking for a holiday rental, these features may help you choose your preferred base; plan specific routes between the various places separately.
Festivals, traditions and local cuisine
Zambiapunga is one of Taperoá’s centuries-old folk traditions. Performances take place occasionally, particularly as part of the celebrations of São Brás. The programme for the 2022 Festa de São Brás included a novena at Igreja de São Brás every day at 7 p.m. from 25 January to 2 February. A morning service, Masses and a procession were traditionally planned for 3 February. These historical details describe the 2022 programme, not a current events calendar.
Dendê is part of Taperoá’s local identity, both in its cuisine and in religious practices. One example of the culinary side was the Festival Gastronômico Diversidades do Quilombo, held on 19 March 2022 in Graciosa, a district of Taperoá. Among other things, moquecas made with local fruits were presented there. The festival should be understood as a single event from that year, not as an announced recurring date.
The Capela de Nossa Senhora d’Ajuda in the Camurugi district is also part of the municipality’s history; it was built in the first half of the 18th century. Together with the Igreja de São Brás, it offers a glimpse of different historic places, while the information about Zambiapunga and dendê highlights cultural traditions and local identity.
Graciosa and its connection to the islands
The Canal de Taperoá connects several settlements in the Cairu Archipelago with mainland towns, including Taperoá. In Graciosa, a district of Taperoá, there is a pier from which speedboats depart for the islands of Cairu and Boipeba. Graciosa is 7.3 kilometres from Taperoá. If you are planning to depart from there, take the pier’s location into account when planning your day and check departure times in advance. This lets you choose your accommodation based on your planned priorities without assuming a particular location for it.
Taperoá is therefore well suited to a trip planned around historic buildings, local culture and waterside destinations in whatever balance you prefer. First decide whether the historic centre, the bathing spots in the municipality or a departure from Graciosa matters most for your days. You can then look for holiday rentals and organise your outings around those priorities.
