Sobradinho brings together technical navigation, water activities and a long history of rock art. When planning your trip, it is worth choosing a clear focus: are you most interested in lock engineering and nautical sports, excursions on the river, or culture and history?

Waterways, Lake and Excursions

The Eclusa de Sobradinho began operating in 1979. It enables vessels up to 120 meters long, 17 meters wide and with a draft of 2.5 meters to overcome a height difference of 32.5 meters. The lock system enables navigation along the section of the Rio São Francisco between Pirapora in Minas Gerais and Juazeiro in Bahia. Its dimensions and the connection along the river make the lock a concrete technical point of interest if you are interested in the region’s waterways.

The Barragem de Sobradinho is the city’s biggest tourist attraction. Conditions at Lago de Sobradinho are suitable for nautical sports, and the Copa de Vela is held there. If you would like to include the regatta in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance.

Balneário Chico Periquito offers a different kind of stay by the water: it is suitable for relaxing with the family and for beach sports. Excursions to Ilha da Fantasia are also possible, as are trips on the Rio São Francisco near Sobradinho. The options therefore differ in focus: the lake is associated with nautical sports, while the river is an option for excursions.

Rock Art and Vaqueiro Tradition

Sobradinho’s archaeological history can also be traced to specific places and figures. In the area of São Gonçalo da Serra, 33 archaeological sites with rock art panels were identified in the Serras do Saco do Morcego and Corrente. The rock art panels are dated to between 9,000 and 6,500 years ago.

The Vaqueiro tradition is reflected in various events. During the 21st Cavalgada do Vaqueiro, riders paraded through Sobradinho’s streets and avenues in 2025. Forró do Vaqueiro is a separate event highlight: its 21st edition took place from October 3 to 5, 2025, at Pátio de Eventos Vaqueiro Bryan and was celebrated as a festival of culture, faith and tradition.

The traditional Sunday program of Forró do Vaqueiro includes breakfast for Vaqueiros, a parade and a mass. For the 2025 edition, the traditional Vaqueiro lunch was moved to a new format and held at Pátio de Eventos Vaqueiro Bryan to welcome Vaqueiros and visitors in greater comfort. Since program details can vary from year to year, check the dates and program for the relevant edition if you want to plan your trip around a festival.

Sobradinho thus offers a range of travel interests: the lock’s technical significance, nautical activities on the lake, excursions on the Rio São Francisco, archaeological evidence and events centered on the Vaqueiro tradition. Which of these aspects matters most to you can help you choose the right time and focus for your stay.
